CHARLES BARKLEY says his daughter, Christiana - even though she's 17 - doesn't date. "Thank goodness," Barkley was saying the other day. "I just hope she doesn't start before I go in the Hall of Fame. That way, I won't have to kill anybody before I get inducted."

When we were younger, we played hookey to go to the Spectrum and watch the Sixers play an afternoon playoff game against the Atlanta Hawks.

3. Philadelphia Inquirer - Barkley's big night about to become real
Rick Mahorn played only a couple of seasons with Charles Barkley while with the 76ers, and they were good teammates and friends. But he was nonetheless surprised when Barkley called him and invited him to his induction ceremony at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

In retrospect, the citizens of the Philadelphia region should have known that the result of Ed Snider's vision of a world-class arena would be a rousing success.

Of all the numbers that Charles Barkley amassed in his career - the 23,757 points, the 12,546 rebounds, the nine all-star appearances, the massive amounts of pizza and beer - the one with which he is currently obsessed is 18.

2. ABC News - MLK Memorial Dream Soon to Be a Reality
"We expect construction to begin around February or March, when the weather breaks." Adding star power to the project, NBA star Chris Webber and "Days of Our Lives" actor James Reynolds attended the press conference held this morning on the site of the future memorial.

3. Philadelphia Business Journal - 10 years of pretzels, cheesesteaks and games
In celebration of the Wachovia Center's 10th anniversary this week, building owner Comcast-Spectacor on Tuesday released a list of what it calls "some very unusual numbers and statistics" connected to the South Philadelphia arena.

4. Courier Post - Wachovia Center still waits for a title
Scott Stevens lowered the boom. The Detroit Red Wings broke out the brooms. Vince Carter wore a cap and gown in the morning, then hit the back of the Game 7 rim in the afternoon. Allen Iverson cupped his hand to his ear, calling for more noise -- and the sound, and the season, lasted all the way to June.

The L.A. Lakers' Aaron McKie, entering what he says could be his final NBA season, is looking at the future. And it's in his past. McKie, who went to Gratz High and Temple University and turns 34 in October, has started a foundation aimed at Philly kids.

1. Philadelphia Inquirer - Ex-76er McKie starts a community project
Aaron McKie may be employed by the Los Angeles Lakers, but his heart is still in his hometown of Philadelphia.

2. Philadelphia Daily News - A.I.'s mom to own new ABA team
Ann Iverson, mother of 76ers star Allen Iverson, will be the majority owner and chairwoman of the American Basketball Association's new team in Richmond, Va.

3. Associated Press - ABA to Return to Richmond with Iverson's Mom as Owner
RICHMOND, Va. -- The Answer's mom has her own team.

4. Inside Bay Area - Iverson would awaken Warriors
It seems everybody in the world (except NBA coaches) knows how to attack American players - with speed at the point. And if it works for, say, Puerto Rico against American All-Stars, you'd think it might be a nice ploy for the Warriors to try against, say, the Clippers. Mullin has two such weapons - Baron Davis and Monta Ellis. I suggest a third: Allen Iverson.

1. The Philadelphia Inquirer - Barkann gets new hosting challenge
Is Michael Barkann ready to give David Letterman a run for his money? Barkann, who receives as much face time as any person in Philadelphia, will be hosting Comcast SportsNet's Monday Night Live, a one-hour entertainment-driven sports show that will debut at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11.

2. The Philadelphia Inquirer - Wagner's road back to the NBA
With his health and his game improving, the Camden product wants a return to the pros.

3. Associated Press - Lakers' McKie starts foundation for kids in Philly
Los Angeles Lakers guard Aaron McKie has formed a foundation to help the development of Philadelphia-area children.



Sixers Headlines -- August 24, 2006


1. News of Delaware County - Where dance and basketball meet
An Aldan woman and a Drexel Hill woman join the Philadelphia 76ers dance team roster this fall.

2. The Orgeonian - Squeals of sadness mark Pig 'N Pancake's passing
"I can't imagine coming back to Portland and not seeing the Pig 'N Pancake," said Maurice Cheeks, the former Trail Blazer coach who was a devoted regular during his years in Portland. "You're losing a very special place there. Some things just belong."

3. The London Free Press - London's OES Inc. is becoming a world player in quality scoreboards.
OES Inc., which makes scoreboards for teams ranging from elementary schools to the pro leagues, recently shipped a scoreboard to the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL and is preparing to ship another to the Wachovia Center, home of the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers and NBA's 76ers.

1. Philadelphia Daily News - Dajuan Wagner waiting to hear back from Sixers after tryout
Former Camden High star Dajuan Wagner said he tried out with the Sixers last Thursday but hasn't heard from the team yet.

2. Philadelphia Daily News - Who's who in quest for slot licenses
It reads like a missing chapter of Who's Who in Philadelphia... and Beyond. It is a mix of the glamorous - including hoops legend Dawn Staley, record producer Quincy Jones, fitness guru Pat Croce and mogul Donald Trump - and the politically connected, like power attorney Richard Sprague and local NAACP chief J. Whyatt Mondesire.



Sixers Headlines -- August 22, 2006


1. Philadelphia Inquirer - 76ers on the Air
The 76ers announced yesterday that all 82 regular-season games will be televised in 2006-07. The team said that Comcast SportsNet will carry 72 games, including all 41 home contests in high definition, and that CW 57 will televise 10 road games.

2. Courier Post - Sixers give Wagner a workout
Former Camden High School star Dajuan Wagner had a workout with the 76ers recently at their practice facility at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

3. Los Angeles Times - His Feats Stood Above the Rest
He was arguably the dominant sports figure of his time, and Los Angeles can be grateful that some of that was spent here. If Wilton Norman Chamberlain had lived, he would have been 70 Monday.



Sixers Headlines -- Aug. 18, 2006


1. Philadelphia Daily News - Scoreboard watching
LOST AMID THE HECTIC early-August news of Phillies trades, Chase Utley's hitting streak heading into the 30s, Cole Hamels' strong starts and the Sixers being (or not being) for sale, was this item that might interest Philly sports fans (or at least those who can afford to go to a sporting event): Comcast-Spectacor announced there will be a new main scoreboard at the Wachovia Center.

2. Toronto Sun - U.S. win good for Canada
There's another interesting possibility. Philadelphia 76ers centre Samuel Dalembert, who was born in Haiti, but raised in Montreal, has expressed interest in playing for Canada.

1. Calkins Newspapers - King denies rumored Webber trade to Knicks
Could it be that 76ers president Billy King, unable to work out a deal for star Allen Iverson, has turned his attention to dealing Chris Webber?

While the Sixers vied for a sign-and-trade for Jeffries, Philly weeks ago approached the Knicks, asking Thomas to make an offer for rejuvenated Chris Webber.

Michael Bradley played for five NBA teams in five seasons, the last season-plus with the 76ers. The 6-10 forward's next team is in a different league.

The 76ers have hired Michael Preston as director of public relations. He spent the last three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.

1. Philadelphia Inquirer - Ex-76ers coach to return to area
Whither Larry Brown? The peripatetic basketball coach, fired by the New York Knicks in June, is fixing to move back to the Philly area, where he and his family lived from 1997 to 2003 while he coached the 76ers. He and his wife, Shelly, have a line on a Main Line mansion.

CHARLES BARKLEY was barely back within city limits yesterday when he was greeted by a headline he could have read almost any day here.

3. Philadelphia Inquirer - Young thieves vandalize Alex's Lemonade Stand
Young burglars broke into the headquarters of Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation in Ardmore and stole donations and wristbands - and bottles of lemonade - sometime last Friday night.

Julius Erving was somewhere in Arizona when he was informed that Fitz Eugene Dixon, the 76ers' owner who brought him into the NBA in 1976, had died yesterday.

2. Philadelphia Daily News - Area sports icon Fitz Dixon dies
Fitz Eugene Dixon Jr. will probably go down in Philadelphia sports history as the guy who brought Julius Erving to the 76ers.

3. Philadelphia Daily News - Dan Gross | Tilley taking CN8 to court?
Sixers center Samuel Dalembert signed autographs between bites of bronzino and salad the other night at Frederick's (757 S. Front) where he ate with attorney Nino Tinari and wife, Carol.

Pat Williams drove his car through the gates of Erdenheim Farm and, almost too breathless to speak, told his boss, F. Eugene Dixon Jr., that he had a chance to obtain the great Julius Erving for the 76ers.
