Sixers Sign Greg Buckner to a Contract


Philadelphia 76ers General Manager Billy King announced on Thursday, July 25, that the Sixers have signed free agent guard Greg Buckner. Per team policy, terms of the contract are not released.

During the 2001-02 season, Buckner averaged 5.8 ppg and 3.9 rpg.

Buckner, a 6-4, 210-pound guard, played the last three seasons in Dallas. In 2001-02, Buckner averaged 5.8 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.1 assists while starting 16 of the 44 games he played. He scored in double figures 10 times, including a season-high 18 points at Chicago on Jan. 2, 2002 and passed for a career-high six assists versus Portland on March 14, 2002. Overall, in his three-year NBA career with the Mavericks, the Clemson product has averaged 5.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 129 games.

A second round draft pick (53rd overall) by the Mavericks in 1998, Buckner was waived by Dallas on Feb. 2, 1999 without playing an NBA game. He played with Grand Rapids in the CBA for the remainer of the 1998-99 season, averaging 8.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists. Buckner re-signed with the Mavericks on August 3, 1999. After being waived by Dallas on November 1, 1999, he signed two 10-day contracts, the first on January 6, 2000 and eventually for the remainder of the season on Jan. 26, 2000. Dallas signed him to a multi-year contract on August 5, 2000.
