PHILADELPHIA, PA - Sept. 30, 2002 - The Sixers have signed free agent guard William Avery and forward Art Long to their 2002-03 training camp roster, 76ers General Manager Billy King announced on Monday, September 30.
Avery, 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, is a three-year NBA veteran with career averages of 2.7 points and 1.4 assists in 142 games with Minnesota. In 2001-02, he finished the season averaging 2.5 points and 1.3 assists in 28 games. A first round draft choice (14th overall) in 1990 by the Timberwolves, Avery entered the draft after two years at Duke University where he was an Associated Press honorable mention All-American.
Long, 6-foot-9, 250 pounds, played the last two seasons with Seattle and Sacramento compiling career averages of 4.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 14.0 minutes per game in 72 contests. He started 27 contests with Seattle last season. After not being drafted in 1996, Long played overseas in Portugal, France, Argentina, Cyprus and Puerto Rico from 1996 through 2001 as well as in the CBA with Iowa and Yakima. He was signed by Portland in January 1999 but did not play an NBA game. Long eventually made his NBA debut with Sacramento in February 2001.
