Andre Iguodala selected to 2012 All-Star Game - 2/9/2012

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – FEBRUARY 9, 2012 – Tonight, the reserves for the 2012 NBA All-Star Game were announced and Sixer forward Andre Iguodala was selected for the first time in his career. He becomes the first Sixer not named Allen Iverson to make an All-Star Game since Dikembe Mutombo in 2002. The reserves were voted on by head coaches in each conference, who each picked seven players (two forwards, two guards, a center and two ‘wildcard’ players from any position) not from their own team.

"On behalf of the entire Philadelphia 76ers organization, I want to congratulate Andre Iguodala on being named a member of the NBA Eastern Conference All-Star team," said Managing Owner Josh Harris. "My first season here has already provided a number of highlights on and off the court, but Andre receiving this honor for the first time is among the best. We are excited and proud that Andre will be representing our team, our fans and the city of Philadelphia during All-Star weekend."

“Andre has proven time and time again that he is one of the NBA’s elite players and premier defenders,” said CEO and Co-Owner Adam Aron. “He has been an integral part of our team’s success this season. Andre Iguodala has displayed the passion, intensity and pride that is representative of our team and our city. We want to congratulate Andre on this great honor.”

"I feel great that Andre has been recognized by the Eastern Conference head coaches as one of the top players in the league," said Sixers President of Basketball Operations Rod Thorn. "He is certainly one of the best all-around players in the NBA and very deserving of this honor."

"I could not be more proud of Andre Iguodala for being recognized as an All-Star," said Head Coach Doug Collins. "Andre has meant so much to the success of our team this season and he is one of the most talented, unselfish players I have ever had the opportunity to coach - the entire 76ers organization, our coaching staff, his teammates and I are thrilled he will be representing us in this year's All-Star game."

Iguodala was originally the ninth overall pick by Philadelphia in the 2004 NBA Draft. Now in his eighth season, Iguodala has started all but 21 of a possible 600 games for his career.

In 579 career games, Iguodala is averaging 15.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.75 steals in 37.9 minutes per game. He is one of just 11 players, who started playing after the NBA began tracking steals in 1973-74, with career averages of at least 15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 1.5 steals. Also on that list are Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Clyde Drexler, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Steve Francis and four other active players: Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Tyreke Evans.

Iguodala is looking to be the first Sixer to play in an All-Star Game since Allen Iverson in 2006. Iverson was voted a starter for the Eastern Conference as a member of the Sixers in 2010, but did not play due to personal reasons. This will be Iguodala’s third time participating in an All-Star Weekend. He took part in the Rookie Challenge in 2005 and again in 2006, taking home MVP honors in the process. Iguodala also competed in the Slam Dunk contest that year, finishing second behind Nate Robinson.

Last month, Iguodala was named as one of 20 finalists for the 2012 Olympic men’s basketball team. He was a starter on the 2010 U.S. World Championship Team which won the gold medal in Turkey. Iguodala was also a member of the U.S. Select Team which helped prepare Team USA for the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship and the 2008 Olympics.
