Sixers Select Joel Embiid Third Overall
After months of speculation about the Sixers’ top selection, the dust has finally settled. Thursday night, the team selected Kansas center Joel Embiid with the third-overall pick.
As a freshman at Kansas, the Yaoundé, Cameroon native averaged 11.2 points (62.6 FG%), 8.1 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks in just 23.1 minutes per game. His impressive play, coupled with the fact that he only began playing basketball competitively in 2010, helped cement his status as a top-three pick.
“He has unbelievable basketball IQ and unbelievable feel,” said Kansas head coach Bill Self after the pick was made. “I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a guy that’s only played a sport for three years that’s better than him.”
