Special lower level tickets available for $35; Sixers Charities and the Comcast-Spectacor Foundation to donate a portion of the proceeds to the Melanoma Research Foundation
Philadelphia, Pa. – November 4, 2009 – The Philadelphia 76ers want to block out the suns, literally, by hosting Melanoma Awareness Night on Monday, November 9 when the team hosts the Phoenix Suns at 7:00p.m. Main Line Health, the official Healthcare partner of the Sixers, will conduct free melanoma screenings and distribute melanoma information to all patrons throughout the game.
"Melanoma affects one in 74 people and its rate of occurrence is increasing faster than any other cancer,” explained Ned Z. Carp, MD, Director of Surgical Oncology at Lankenau Hospital. “Regular melanoma screenings are critical to raise awareness as well as to help find the disease in it earliest stages."
"We are proud to help our partners at Main Line Health further the awareness of melanoma screenings and promote such a worthwhile endeavor," said Sixers Senior Vice President of Business Operations Lara Price. "We feel very strongly about assisting whenever we can in order to encourage people to take preventative measures and get screened."
Fans are encouraged to take part in free melanoma screenings on the Wachovia Center Concourse beginning one hour prior to tip-off at 6:00p.m. and ending at the completion of halftime. Materials about Melanoma will be available on the concourse for fans to learn about the dangers related to excessive exposure to the sun and the harmful effects that it can cause.
During the evening, the Sixers will present Regional Vice President/East of the Associated Press Linda Stowell with the Sixers Pioneer Award, which recognizes individuals who have dedicated their lives to bringing awareness to a health related cause.
Since her diagnosis, Linda has become a spokesperson for Melanoma awareness and has dedicated her time to sharing her story with others to help raise money towards finding a cure for the disease.
