Sure, we knew if the 76ers lost Game 6 last Friday at the First Union Center, the season would be history. We knew that going into the game. Still, as it all unfolded, it seemed hard to believe it was still about to come to…a….stop… Disappointed? In some respects, yes. As Sixers fans, we had no reason to believe the series wouldn’t follow its established pattern, with the home team winning each of the first five games. Though in the end, perhaps the Detroit Pistons ultimately proved why they were the top seed in the East. While the Sixers did not get to the Finals, it might hearten some look back at the season just completed as we contemplate the long, hot summer ahead. For starters, the 76ers won 48 games, a pretty good number when you consider factors such as injury and acclimating new players. The team started the year 15-4, including 10-straight wins at home. Then, a 10-20 swoon left them at 25-24 as the all-star break hit. Who would’ve thought the Sixers would do what they did after the all-star break: 10-straight victories followed by an impressive West Coast trip, a legitimate run at the top seed in the conference until the final week of the season and winning the first round of the playoffs on the road in a hostile New Orleans Arena. This summer will bring some interesting developments like the inevitable roster changes, which will include free agent signings and re-signings, trades, and the NBA draft. And if past history is any indication, the Sixers should be busy. |
