Sixers Seek To Replace Hill
In losing Tyrone Hill for the next three-to-four weeks with a right calf muscle tear, the Sixers have lost a player that barely averages three points and rebounds per game in about 14 minutes. You would think that this would be a relatively easy void to fill, right? Not so because it's the things that don't show up in the box score that Hill does that the Sixers will miss most. "He is a great defender and a terrific rebounder," said Sixers Head Coach Larry Brown at the Sixers practice on Tuesday. "He gives you toughness. They (the Pistons) have size, depth, and they have some matchups that are really critical. He can get out on the floor and defend pick and rolls. The fact that he has been in the league and understands his role, and is not afraid to fail is huge." The Sixers have two viable options to step in for Hill - forwards Brian Skinner and Monty Williams. Who Brown will chose will depend upon who is in the line-up for Detroit. "I think that there are some match-ups that if they go big, it's unfair to Monty, said Brown. "There are some match-ups that if they go small that we'll be able to use him. We'll just have to wait and see." If the Pistons go big, Skinner's role is clear to Brown, "He just has to rebound and defend. I am not concerned. If he does those things, he'll really help us." This would be a role that Skinner is familiar with as early on in the season he was the first big man off the Sixers bench and understands the role that Hill played for this team. "(Hill) comes off the bench, gives us a lot of energy and gets a lot of key rebounds, Skinner said. He has a lot of playoff experience. When you have been in the league for that long, you are going to have a lot of experience with the playoffs. That's always an extra bonus." Sixers starting center Derrick Coleman also recognizes what the team loses with Hill out of the lineup, "I think that really hurts us because he brings us that extra strength off the bench, that force in the middle that we need. I think it is really an opportunity for other guys to step up and fill that void." Now who steps in to fill that void, we'll just have to wait and see. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
