Sixers Draft French Guard; Trade His Rights to Seattle for Willie Green

NBA Draft 2003 - Sixers Obtain Draft Rights to Willie Green

  • Sixers Acquire Rights to Kyle Korver

Philadelphia 76ers President and General Manager Billy King announced that the Sixers received the draft rights to Detroit Mercy product Willie Green, the 41st overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft, from Seattle for the rights to Paccelis Morlende, the 50th overall selection, and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Green, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound guard, averaged a career-best 22.6 points per game during his senior season, a mark that ranked 11th nationally, earning him Horizon League Player of the Year honors and an Honorable Mention All-America selection by The Associated Press. Green averaged 14.3 points per game during his four-year collegiate career, finishing as the fourth leading scorer in Detroit Mercy history with 1,779 points. He connected on 35.2 percent (120-for-341) from three-point range, a mark that ranks sixth in Detroit Mercy history.
Green worked out for the Sixers on June 12. Following the workout, Sixers assistant coach Bob Bender spoke about Green:

    Green bio
Bender on Green: "Willie Green is somebody we liked coming into the Chicago Pre-Draft Camp. All his play there re-confirmed that, and I thought today’s workout was another step in that way. And maybe the most important thing was the fact that he was actually hurt and came in not at 100 percent. Most times you see guys who do that either try it and then not participate or say they can’t go it all. I think that speaks volumes about his hunger. He’s got ability. The things he does well are is that he’s a scorer. He’s got a strong body. He is much bigger than people thought going into all of this and re-confirming our positive feelings about him."

Named Honorable Mention All-America by AP as a senior. Named the 2003 Horizon League Player of the Year and to the All-Horizon First Team. Finished career as the fourth-leading scorer in Detroit history and is sixth in career three-pointers (120). A four-year starter, he scored at least 20 points in 31 games at Detroit. Named to the all-tournament team at the 2003 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament after averaging 19 points.
