G Manu Ginobili vs. G-F Evan Turner

Manu Ginobili has had an up-and-down season. In his first six games this year, he averaged just 7.8 points (34.9 FG%, 15.8 3P%), 3.8 assists, and 2.2 rebounds in 20.6 minutes per night. He followed that up with a stretch of 13 double-digit scoring performances in 15 games, shooting 43.2% from the field during that span. Then, another six games averaging fewer than 10 points per game (9.7) and shooting under 40% from the floor (38.6%). In six games since that slump, he's averaging 14.8 points (48.2 FG%, 52.0 3P%) 3.8 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. When Ginobili shoots under 40% from the field, the Spurs are 9-5; for a team that is 26-9 on the season, that is a telling statistic.

Evan Turner's numbers this year have put the 6-7 guard's name in the discussion for Most Improved Player this season. After averaging just 8.2 points (44.7 eFG%), 4.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game over his first two seasons, the former second-overall pick (2010) is averaging 14.5 points (46.9 eFG%), 6.7 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game. He's scored in double figures in 21 of his last 25 games.

The Key

Despite Manu Ginobili's offensive inconsistency this season, the 11-year veteran still has his hot spots. The 6-6 guard attempts 89.1% of his shots that come from inside the paint within the confines of the restricted area. Overall, 31.9% of his attempts come from within three feet of the basket, where he enjoys a 55.6% conversion rate. Just 16.3% of his attempts are two-point jump shots, and for good reason – he's hit just 28.3% of such attempts on the year. The crux of his shot attempts, though, come from beyond the arc. Surprisingly, 78.4% of his three-point attempts come from above the break (as opposed to the corners), despite the fact that he makes just 33.3% of those attempts. By comparison, he's hit 16 of the 29 corner three attempts he's taken this season (55.2%). With Ginobli, there are two primary actions that must be accounted for – when he's in the lane, attacking the basket and making plays for his teammates and when he's in the corner, spotting up for threes. Overall, he's hitting just 33.3% of his attempts from outside those two areas of the floor.

Sharing Is Caring

As a team, the Spurs are tops in the NBA in assists per game (25.3). Considered by many to be the most fundamentally sound and unselfish offense in the league, Gregg Popovich's Spurs feature 11 players averaging over 1.0 assists per game, led by point guard Tony Parker's 7.4.

In Good Hands

The Spurs are led by head coach Gregg Popovich, who's currently in his 17th season as the team's head coach. He's led San Antonio to seven division titles and three NBA Championships during that span. His winning percentage (68.0%) is the third-highest in NBA history, behind Billy Cunningham and Phil Jackson.
