Sixers host environmental awareness day for students at Phila Zoo - 4/5/2010
On Monday, the 76ers participated in NBA Green Week by hosting an environmental awareness outing for local students at the Philadelphia Zoo.
The event was a partnership between the Sixers, Philadelphia Zoo, and Mayor's Office of Community Services.
Sixers players Jrue Holiday, Elton Brand, Willie Green, Rodney Carney, Jason Kapono, Marreese Speights, and Jodie Meeks were in attendance, along with Hip-Hop, Hare Raisers, and Sixers Dancers to help the students navigate through various stations for a fun and educational day.
The children circulated throughout the zoo to different locations which demonstrated different ways that they can help the environment. The activities included seed planting, finding new uses for everyday household items, and creating a CD reflector to hang at home to help birds fly safely.
Forward Rodney Carney hosted a fishing station, where students were given a toy fishing rod and were told to catch a paper fish laying on the ground using the rods velcro strip. Next, they threw a velcro net into the pool, which led to penguins, sharks, and whales being scooped up as well.
We showed them the consequences of commercial fishing, where fishermen use nets and catch more than they should, said Carney. Catching too much is dangerous for the environment.
At the Energy Storage Bicycle station, Forward Jason Kapono helped demonstrate that choosing to ride a bicycle is better for the environment than driving. Students were encouraged get on a special bicycle and pedal as fast as they could to see how much gas would have been wasted in the distance they rode had they driven a vehicle.
Its great spending time with these kids and making use of this platform we have as NBA players to express the important message of helping the environment, Kapono said. We have to take care of our environment to assure a quality life.
The Sixers will continue to support NBA Green Week 2010 with a special Go Green game when they host the Detroit Pistons at the Wachovia Center tonight at 7 p.m.
NBA Green Week is a partnership with the Natural Resources Defense Council and seeks to serve as a reminder for fans that each of us can help to reduce our environmental footprint. This year marks the second annual NBA Green Week, following up a successful inaugural campaign last year.
