Camping with Lou Williams - 8/17/2009

Camping with Lou Williams

Each morning beginning at 9am, young boys and girls from areas in and around Snellville, GA filled the South Gwinett High School gym for a day of fundamental basketball training that included much more than your usual summer camp.

This basketball camp differed because not only did it offer the key fundamentals, but it was also organized and led by a former hometown legend, Sixers Guard, Lou Williams. A former student at the local high school, Williams returned home to host his annual summer basketball camp for kids aged 6 -16.

Each morning when the kids arrived they were given a daily chalk talk by members of the camp coaching staff and broken up into groups for the various drills, workouts, and pick-up games. Williams along with the other coaches would each work with the kids one-on-one throughout the day, providing tips and demonstrating techniques.

The excitement of being able to work directly with a NBA player and probably the most popular person to come out of Snellville, GA was written all over their faces! When asked why he wanted to attend the camp, 10yr. old Jwuan simply said, "Because itís Lou Williams!"

Because the camp was led by one the most successful alum in the county, the participants had the opportunity to hear several guest speakers throughout the week to include Sixers Guard, Andre Iguodala and Forward, Thaddeus Young.

As a surprise to the campers they also had the opportunity to be a part of a future NBA television special with former Sixer, Eric Snow and Lou Williams as they captured footage highlighting Williamís involvement with the camp.

At the conclusion of the week, Williams acknowledged each camper by awarding them with a certificate of completion and gift-bag. The success of the week long basketball camp was also expressed by Williams as he described why he continues to host it...

"This camp means a lot to me because I can give back to a community that has done so much for me."
