Spy Guy gives Sixer fans the inside scoop on Sixer happenings. From the locker room in the Wachovia Center to their hotel rooms on the road, Spy Guy gets behind the scenes and gives the fans a different perspective.
I can’t believe it’s that time of year again. Sneakers squeakin’, balls bouncin’, guys hangin’ on the rim – it’s just beautiful for a guy like me. That’s why I couldn’t stay away when the 76ers broke Philly and headed South to Duke for training camp. The only problem is, most of the guys slept and slept some more, so my spy glasses didn’t get much use. I guess that’s what happens when you’re lifting weights, shooting, practicing and watching film. Anyway, here’s my first report of the season ….
On the first night off of training camp, AI relaxed by shooting some pool in the game room at the Durham Hilton, wearing his camouflage baseball hat the whole time. He took a break with a cheeseburger, well done, no pink in the middle …
While the little guy likes his beef, there’s a big contingent of sushi lovers on this year’s squad. Big Jack and Brian Skinner waited almost two hours for a takeout order from George’s Garage in Durham on Friday night, after the late session. The spot only had one guy working on the sushi, but the fellas were patient …
That same night, Slammin’ Sammy ordered the sashimi at the Garage as well. Lucky for him, his order was small enough that he went back to the hotel and chilled, hopped in his rental, sat down at the restaurant, ate, and was back in bed before Skin and Jack even had a bite …
On recommendation from Kyle, a big group hit the movies to see Ladder 49 during the week. Johnny, Andre, Josh, and Sammy all went together to get out of the hotel. Reviews? Guess it wasn’t the inspiration they were looking for, cause there weren’t too many thumbs up …
Hope the Conshocken Curve isn’t going to be too backed up this season – looks like Skinner and Andre will both be making that commute to PCOM after buying houses out there …
Where’s the complaint department? I need to register mine about the air conditioning in the hotel – because of construction for a new wing, they turned it off most of the day. Got a little warm. Lucky for us, team travel guy Allen Lumpkin was all over the hotel staff to cool it off ….
The cool factor is way, way low on this trip. The only rides available – mini vans. Coach snagged the Navigator for his crew, and BK’s got the Chrysler 300C. It’s the closest thing to a Bentley in Durham …
One thing that hasn’t changed for BK since his college days is his love for Bullock’s Barbeque. According to the team prez, the spot has the best sliced pork, ever. He orders the family style portion, feeds six, for $60. European scout Danko Cvjeticanin, who is used to the fare in Croatia, had it for the first ever on Saturday night and loved it …
