76ers Practice Recap - Oct. 4

Photo Gallery: October 4 Practice

For the first time since the start of training camp, the 76ers had a chance to practice on the main floor at Palau St. Jordi, the site of tomorrow evening’s game against FC Barcelona.

“We're just trying to get our guys in game condition. We realize that we have a game tomorrow night, so we're just trying to get some conditioning, and that's the reason why we practiced on this court over here, so that we could familiarize ourselves with the court. The lane is wider, and a lot of us haven't had a chance to play on a European court like it is now.”

The emphasis again this morning was on defense and rebounding, the resounding and emphatic theme of this year’s camp.

The practice started in typical fashion, with shooting and passing drills, with the “bigs” at one end of the court and the “smalls” at the other end and then a series of defensive drills to get warm. To start the day, the team went over their inbounds sets, with such a focus on fundamentals that Coach Cheeks and Coach Lynam covered every detail of placement and positioning after each play.

But, as much as the team was working on inbounding the ball, they were working harder on how to defend it.

“I thought we played pretty good. Our offense was good, and our defense was better.”

Again, the tone of the team drills – from the full-court four-on-fours to the free throws – all focused on defense. At one point during defensive drills, the team hit their marks and communicated so well, they drew a brief round of applause from the coaching staff.

That was followed quickly by Allen Iverson’s full-court defense forcing Louis Williams into a backcourt violation.

Moreover, as was predicted during the trip to Europe, the teamwork, communication and chemistry is continuing to evolve, as Chris Webber – who was on the floor diving for loose balls numerous times – has been imparting wisdom to rookies Steven Smith and Bobby Jones, while the coaching staff has shown individual attention when needed.

The practice concluded with a regulation, full-team scrimmage – the first one of camp featuring the working clock, shot clock and score – with Iverson, Webber, Samuel Dalembert, Andre Iguodala and Willie Green playing together on the black squad against Kyle Korver, Rodney Carney, Kevin Ollie, Shavlik Randolph and Steven Hunter. The two teams displayed the defensive intensity that they've been working on over the last week, and worked their way to a 29-29 tie after a full half (24 minutes) of play.

The first test will come on Thursday night when the Sixers face their first opponent of the new season – FC Barcelona. The game will air on NBA TV, which can be found on both Comcast Digital Cable and DirecTV.
