Sixers Open Rookie Mini-Camp
In preparation for the 2006 Rocky Mountain Revue Summer League, the 76ers opened a four-day summer mini-camp at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), the team’s practice facility.
Among the participants were Sixers guard Louis Williams and draft-night acquisitions Rodney Carney, Bobby Jones and Edin Bavcic. Sixers President Billy King expects former La Salle standout Steven Smith to join the team Wednesday morning after he finishes playing with the Warriors in the Vegas Summer League. Tayron Thomas, the leading scorer in the history of Division II Philadelphia University, is also looking to earn a spot on the roster.
While the Sixers signed Carney and Jones over the weekend, they have yet to come to terms with Bavcic, who received permission from his club team to participate in summer league.
“More or less for him, it’s going to be understanding and learning the NBA, and then we’ll make a decision after Summer League on what we’ll do with him,” King said about Bavcic.
As for the status on Allen Iverson, King remains busy on the phone but does not feel obligated to make a blockbuster move.
“Allen and I had a great conversation after the season,” King said. “So we’re not in the mode where we feel that we have to do something.
“We talked about everything. We talked about where we stand and his thoughts. He understands, and I’ve talked to [Iverson’s agent] Leon [Rose] numerous times throughout the summer.”
Carney understands that the decision is out of his hands.
“That’s the business,” Carney said. “Hopefully, I get to play with Allen, but if not, I will sometime. I don’t pay attention [to the rumors]. I just have to concentrate on what I have to do.”
With Wednesday marking the first day that teams can officially sign players, King is hoping that the Sixers will retain their restricted free agents.
“We’re close with some of our own free agents,” King said. “Hopefully, we will have that done by Thursday.”
The Sixers will continue practicing twice a day before departing Thursday for Salt Lake City, Utah. They will open play at the Revue with a 5 pm (ET) game against Seattle.
