On Thursday Sixers President Billy King and Head Coach Maurice Cheeks had the same vision in mind for their new season.
“We are going to rebound the ball, we are going to play defense, we’re going to play as a team and those are the things that help basketball teams,” said Cheeks.
The Sixers held Media Day at the Wachovia Center on Friday and 10-year veteran Allen Iverson hammered out the same main points when speaking with the media about the upcoming 2006-07 season.
“We gave up a lot of lay-ups and second chance baskets last year,” Iverson said. “I think it’s going to be important for us to just concentrate solely, from the beginning, on defense and rebounding the basketball.”
The off-season proved to be another obstacle for Iverson, but he says this is not the first time there has been trade talks. He remains optimistic and said he’s able to cope with the pressure.
“I’m not surprised because I’ve been hearing the trade talks every year,” Iverson said. “I would kinda be lying if I said I was use to it, but it’s definitely something I can deal with. After a while, you understand this is a business and everybody has their opinion.”
Iverson said those opinions are nothing until he hears the call from President Billy King. And until then, Iverson is focused on bringing a championship to Sixers fans.
“I’ll do anything that it will take to win," Iverson said. "I’ll play as hard as I can play and I’ll give everything that I have. I wanna win a championship more than anybody in this league and I wanna win the championship in Philadelphia.”
Chris Webber took the podium and sat among reporters with anticipation for the new season.
“I definitely want to get back to playing ball,” Webber said. “I am just happy to overcome knee injuries and I thank God for the opportunity to do the thing I love.”
The Sixers have added Moses Malone and Jim Lynam as assistant coaches in hopes of improving the team's defense for the upcoming season. Nobody was happy with the outcome of the 2005-06 season, and Webber stated that he believes that this team can be successful.
“We’ve had a chance to lose together and now is our chance to win together,” said Webber. "We’ve learned our lessons and we have some great talent. It’s up to us to be a tight-nit unit and play together.”
The team left for training camp in Barcelona, Spain after Media Day on Friday as a part of NBA Europe Live. Be sure to check daily as we will post exclusive news conferences, photos and blogs while the team opens their season in Europe.
