Staff Sgt. Columber of the U.S. Army had watched Turner since the guard’s early playing days.

The Sixers’ rookie guard gave 6-year-old Kacy Wilson of North Philadelphia a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Shortly after the team’s practice at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM), Wilson, her mother Keva and other family members met Turner on the court. Hip-Hop gave Wilson a backpack full of Sixers gear, including a team basketball and brand-new Evan Turner jersey. She even received a grand tour of the team’s practice facility.
Now healthy, Wilson was born two months premature and weighed just 2 lbs 15 oz. She endured seven surgeries in her first six months of life. She and her family received support from the March of Dimes – a not-for-profit organization dedicated to ensuring that all babies are born healthy and full-term – throughout her lengthy journey to good health.
Wilson will be honored for her bravery at Comcast SportsNet’s Shining Star Awards on January 21. Turner is the Sixers’ representative for the event and will present Wilson with her award.
Susan Elder, director of development for the Pennsylvania chapter of the March of Dimes, explained why Kacy was one of four children chosen to be honored at the banquet.
“Her story is very symbolic of the struggle of babies born preterm,” she said. “She was in the NICU [neonatal intensive-care unit] for six months. Her mom wasn’t able to take her home.
“That’s a story that not many people hear about, but it’s so sad and so hard for the moms and dads. We wanted to shine the spotlight on that family to show that this is happening.”
Wilson’s mother appreciated the opportunity for her daughter.
“It means a lot to me,” she said. “[It is] something that she’ll remember for the rest of her life.”
