Fly Eagles, Fly: Sixers Know About Championship Aspirations
A title from one of the four professional teams is something that Philadelphia has not seen since the 76ers brought it home in the 1982-83 season. Preparation for that moment does not begin once the playoffs start, but the foundation is laid made much earlier. “I think you prepare for that in the beginning of the season, offseason, preseason, regular season," said McKie, who along with Allen Iverson and Eric Snow, is one of three Sixers to have played in the Finals. "It’s not like ok we’re doing well, let’s turn it on, let’s get it ready for the NFC Championship or NBA Conference Finals, or the finals. You have to prepare for that in the offseason. That’s when you put your time and your work in towards getting there and contributing to make it. You just have to be focused and know that’s what you want, and everybody else has to be doing the same thing." And while the pressure gets ratcheted up a few notches at the title level, routine and maintaining an even keel become even more important. “Yeah you try and keep it sober and the same routine everyday that way you don’t put added pressure on yourself," Rego, an Eagles season ticket holder, said. "You don’t put added pressure on anybody else. The only thing that you might do different is that certain leagues might make you put certain patches or logos of the uniforms. That’s what makes it different. As far as dealing with players and everything else, you just try and keep everything as normal as possible. Let the media and everybody else handle the magnitude of the situation.” “I’m a humble person. I think I don’t get too high with the highs, and I don’t get too low with the lows," McKie said. "So you kind of maintain all of that and deal with it.” While neither McKie nor Rego would make a prediction about the Eagles fortunes against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, one thing you can bet on is that they will both rooting hard for the Birds. |
