Sixers Dancers Hold Final Auditions at South Philly's Chickie's and Pete's
Minutes before the finalists for the 2008-09 Sixers Dancers took center stage as part of the final phase to the audition process held annually at Chickie’s and Pete’s in South Philadelphia, nerves were running high. Veteran rookie dancers alike worked hard in preparation to make the final cut – the final step was putting it together for the judges.
"We keep practicing the routines until we perfect all the moves," said veteran Melanie. "We try and get our bodies in the best shape we can and mentally try to shine so our personalities really can come out and the judges can see who we are."
Rookies trying out for the first time also felt the pressure of competing against the more experienced Dancers.
"It is really intimidating going up against the veteran Dancers," said Jessica. "They know the routines and style of dance really well. Their showmanship is awesome because they are so used to being out there in front of the crowds."
On this particular night, friends and family of the finalists made their presence felt at the South Philadelphia establishment with their signs and cheers supporting their Dancer of choice. Among those in attendance were local television and radio personalities serving as the judges for the evening.
Sixers public address announcer Matt Cord served as the emcee for the night. After an exciting opening performance, followed by a routine performed by Alumni Dancers, Cord introduced the finalists individually as they participated in a question and answer session. The finalists were then put into groups of three to perform for the judges.
Each Dancer kept her spirits high and let their enthusiasm shine through.
"It is really important to show our personalities to the judges," said first-year participant Lindsay. "The girls are scored on a range of categories including personality, technique and overall appearance."
With choreographed routines, all of the finalists agreed that praise was owed to the new Sixers new Dance Coach Christian Naven.
"Our routines are the best they have ever been," said veteran Kate. "Christian is an amazing coach and really breaks down all the moves so we get them just right."
With complicated choreography and fast paced performances, the routines impressed the judges and the crowd alike.
Every participant agreed that no matter what the outcome of the night would bring, they all had a positive experience preparing and participating for this event.
An appreciation for all the hard work and dedication it takes to become part of the Sixers Dancers was apparent by the conclusion of this final round.
The 2008-09 Sixers Dancers will be unveiled for the first time at the Sixers Beach Bash on Saturday August 2, 2008 at Jack’s Place in Avalon, N.J.
