Career
In one of the most competitive conferences in the nation, Joe Alexander, under his committed and steadfast approach, led West Virginia to their third Sweet 16 appearance in four years, ending with a 24-10, 11-7 regular season record to finish sixth in the Big East. Alexander posted a career-high in points this season to lead the team in scoring (16.9 ppg) and in rebounds (6.4 rpg). He also finished second in blocks (1.5) and third in assists (2.4).
Alexander, who has only been playing organized basketball for five years, had a truly remarkable season as the general for the Mountaineers. He put forth back-to-back 32-point outings, from March 1-3, in two contests against conference rivals UConn and Pittsburgh. Against UConn, Alexander also pulled down 10 rebounds for one of his six double-doubles on the season, and then followed up that display with another double-double of 29 points and 10 boards two games later in a win at St. John’s. He also recorded a season-high seven blocks in a 106-41 victory against Prairie View A&M back on November 18. The 6-8 junior forward tallied 28 double-digit games, which included 13 20-point games and three 30-point games.
Awards
Alexander was tagged as an Honorable Mention All-American by the Associated Press and was also selected to the All-Big East First Team and the USBWA and NABC named him All-District. At the team’s banquet, he was named the program’s Most Valuable Player for the 2007-08 season.
Strengths
Alexander has a nice shooter’s touch and his versatility on the wing and in the low-post makes it hard for defenders to contain him. (NBA.com)
He possesses supreme lateral quickness for a big man. Alexander is strong enough to slash the lanes and his elevation allows him to finish with emphasis at the rim. The 6-8 forward can score at will near the basket. (ESPN.com)
