As a finale to the 76ers “Rule the School” essay contest, the team and coaching staff assisted Haverford Middle School faculty in teaching students Thursday afternoon. Chipper Rossino, the winner of the essay contest was elated as Coach Maurice Cheeks took over as Principal and his team took over the classrooms as teachers.
The day began with the players being introduced to the school in a Pep-Rally emceed by Sixers radio play-by-play announcer Tom McGinnis. Other special appearances included Hip-Hop, Hare Raisers, and Sixers Dancers.
The team was brought to the school not only to meet and greet the students, but also to instill in them the values of hard work and determination. Sixers players provided words of wisdom for students and actually taught them in their seventh period classes.
“Just try to enjoy your time while you’re here and have a lot of respect for the teachers,” Andre Iguodala said to his seventh period math class. “Teachers are important for helping you become better people and that's what it's all about.”
“Be respectable, and be willing to listen and don't be afraid to ask questions,” Sam Dalembert said to his tech class.
It was a treat for the students to have professional basketball players in their school for the day, but the kids were not the only ones who enjoyed themselves.
“It's cool to see what it's (grade school) like,” said Iguodala.” It was so long ago I was this age, it brings back memories of what it was like when you were their age.”
