Read to Achieve - March 2003

Fitzpatrick Elementary School March 24
On March 24, 2003 Sixers mascot Hip-Hop brought the Read to Achieve program to Fitzpatrick Elementary School. A guest reader stressed the importance of reading, spoke to the students about how reading impacts their daily lives and read Bunny’s Noisy Book as Hip-Hop acted it out and led the kids in the Read to Achieve Pledge.

Pennell Elementary School March 24
On March 24, 2003 Sixers mascot Hip-Hop brought the Read to Achieve program to Pennell Elementary School. A guest reader stressed the importance of reading, spoke to the students about how reading impacts their daily lives and read Bunny’s Noisy Book as Hip-Hop acted it out and led the kids in the Read to Achieve Pledge.

Edwin Forrest Elementary School March 11
On March 11, 2003 Sixers Play-by-Play man Marc Zumoff, Lauren of the Dance Team and mascot Hip-Hop brought the Read to Achieve program to Westend Edwin Forrest Elementary School. Zumoff stressed the importance of reading and spoke to the students about how reading impacts their daily lives. Zoo read Bunny’s Noisy Book as Hip-Hop acted it out and led the kids in the Read to Achieve Pledge.

West End Memorial Elementary School March 6
On March 6, 2003 KYW News Radio Sports personality Phil Neuman and Sixers mascot Hip-Hop brought the Read to Achieve program to West End Memorial Elementary School. Phil stressed the importance of reading and spoke to the students about how reading impacts their daily lives. Phil Neuman read Bunny’s Noisy Book as Hip-Hop acted it out and led the kids in the Read to Achieve Pledge.

Carrie Downie Elementary School March 5
On March 5, 2003 Read to Achieve visited the Carrie Downie Elementary school in Delaware. Sixer’s mascot Hip-Hop and special guest Executive Advisor to the 76ers Sonny Hill spoke to the kids about the importance of an education and how essential good reading skills are for their upcoming state test. Sonny Hill read Bunny’s Noisy Book as Hip-Hop acted the story out and led the children in the Read to Achieve Pledge.

Thomas Edison Charter School March 5
76ers Executive Advisor Sonny Hill and Mascot Hip-Hop visited Thomas Edison Charter School for the Read to Achieve program. Sonny Hill spoke to the children about how crucial reading skills are for advancement in life, particularly for the upcoming state test and addressed the importance of good study skills in order to get the most out of the education that they are receiving in school. Sonny read Bunny’s Noisy Book, while Hip-Hop acted it out and special guest Ted Blunt, Delaware City Council President had the students recite the Read to Achieve Pledge.

Read Across America Day March 3
76ers GM Billy King joined in the City of Philadelphia's celebration of Read Across America Day, promoting literacy for children by commemorating the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Billy was joined by Delina from the Sixers Dance Team, Ed Cullen, Asst. VP and Deputy General Counsel for Exelon, Brian Crowe, PECO Energy, Elliot Sholkrot, Director of the Free Library of Philadelphia, Donna Peikarski, School District of Philadelphia, and Beth Brinley, US Department of Education. The group read Yertle the Turtle to a group of 1st grade Philadelphia students. Billy is this year's honorary commissioner of Read Across America Day in Philadelphia.

St Barnabas School March 3
76ers General Manager Billy King visited kids at St. Barnabas School in Southwest Philadelphia for Read Across America Day. Billy read Strong to the Hoop to a fourth grade class and a sixth grade class. After his reading sessions, Billy visited each classroom encouraging the students to read everyday. Each kid received a Scholastic magazine and Read to Achieve bookmark. Billy also made a donation of Scholastic books to the school's library.
