Sixers Executive Vice President Dave Coskey and Ambassador of Basketball World B Free were among the distinguished guests at Woodbine Elementary School on Tuesday afternoon September 17. William Pikolycky, Mayor of Woodbine, Julia Hankerson, president of the Woodbine Board of Education and Janet Yunghans, instructional media specialist joined them to unveil the new Reading and Learning Center.

As a part of their Read to Achieve initiative, the Sixers teamed with Avalon Carpet, Tile and Flooring (Cape May Court House, N.J.), MAB Paints (Ocean City, N.J.) and Home Depot (Burleigh, N.J.), to complete the renovations that included newly painted walls, carpeting, furniture and books.

Student Representative Marvin welcomed the students and introduced the emcee for the ceremony, Sixers television broadcaster Marc Zumoff.

“Do you know what we have down the hall?” Zumoff asked the students. “We have heroes and heroines. We have history and geography. We have drama and tragedy. We have great things and bad things. We have the opportunity for all of you to go anywhere you want to go at anytime,” he said describing the new Reading and Learning Center.

Zumoff then handed the microphone over to Mayor Pikolycky who thanked the 76ers, local businesses and school board. He then stressed the importance of education and reading to the students.

World B Free then took the mic and began a ‘Let’s Go Sixers’ chant. The former NBA All-Star presented the 76ers Read to Achieve Reading Challenge. “Reading is very important, “ Free told the kids.

Free went into the crowd and asked a student from each grade to stand and state the amount of books they will read this year. Each grade tried to out do the other, with one grade saying they’d read over 4,000 books this year! Zumoff told the students that in order for them to get a pizza party from the 76ers, they will have to read 16,700 books during the school year.

The ceremonial ribbon was cut Tuesday afternoon at the new Reading & Learning Center at Woodbine Elementary School.
Julia Hankerson and Janet Yunghans each spoke and expressed their excitement about the opening of the new library and thanked all that took part.

Before the ceremony ended, Dave Coskey addressed the students and presented a "Key" to one.

“We’ve always said that reading and books are the keys to our future, so our Read to Achieve program is what we think is the key to the future for a lot of youth in Philadelphia. It’s with great pleasure and pride that I give you our Read to Achieve key,” Coskey said to Brian, a member of the student body.

Some of the students and guests then went down the hall for the special ribbon cutting ceremony. After the ribbon was cut, Mayor Pikolycky presented Coskey with a key to the borough of Woodbine.

After the ribbon cutting ceremony, Rookie members of the Dance Team La-Tisha and Kelly read some books to first grade students, while World B Free checked out the new computer with the older kids.
