La Liga Del Barrio Tip-Off 2005

Philadelphia 76ers center Samuel Dalembert along with 76ers President and General Manager Billy King helped to tip off the fifth season of 76ers La Liga del Barrio, the city’s first Latino youth basketball league, on Wednesday, Dec. 15. The tip-off ceremonies for 76ers La Liga del Barrio, presented by Verizon Wireless and Gift of Life Donor Program, were held at the Edison High School Gymnasium. The league is for boys and girls ages six to 16 and has grown to encompass 32 teams with 12 players per team.

“La Liga Del Barrio is in its’ fifth season and has been a great success within the Latino Community, especially with the interactive support of the 76ers organization. The community has embraced this league with open arms, and is eager for it to begin,” La Liga Del Barrio Coordinator Juan Santiago said. “Kids are constantly inquiring about when the league is going to begin so that they can gain more knowledge on the game and of course, expend their energy. Obviously, the kids and their parents have enjoyed La Liga Del Barrio.”

Dalembert is once again serving as the Honorary Commissioner of La Liga this season, his third with the program. Ambassador of 76ers Basketball World B. Free as well as 76ers radio voice Tom McGinnis and former City Councilman Angel L. Ortiz will also be in attendance for the opening ceremonies.

“We are pleased to continue our strong and growing relationship with La Liga Del Barrio,” King said. “The league provides a great outlet for all of the children involved to not only learn about the game of basketball but to develop as individuals in a terrific atmosphere.”

La Liga’s fundamental purpose is to promote educational achievement, discipline, create a spiritual awareness, peer group socialization, and collaboration. More overtly, it seeks to help in the development of basketball skills, the physical and mental preparation the sport demands and the basic enjoyment of a great sport.

Each player receives an official La Liga Del Barrio T-shirt, and select participants have the opportunity to play on the 76ers home court prior to a game.
