Sixers Host 'SIXERS STRONG Fit Week' to Get Kids Active and Healthy in the New Year

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – JANUARY 3, 2014 – The Philadelphia 76ers today announced plans for “SIXERS STRONG FIT Week,” which begins on Friday, January 3 and continues through Friday, January 10. Events during the week are intended to raise awareness about the importance of living healthy, active lives while getting kids to play and make smarter food choices.

“Better health and fitness are mainstay New Year’s resolutions, but we are focused on those initiatives year-round through SIXERS STRONG,” said Sixers CEO Scott O’Neil. “By exposing children to active lifestyles and nutritious foods, we hope to make an impact this week and beyond by helping them form positive, lifelong habits.”

During their home game on Monday, January 6 when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves at 7:00 p.m., the Sixers will celebrate the 19th season of their Sixers Neighborhood Basketball League (SNBL) by having children from the league play a special halftime game and participate in high-five tunnels.

On Wednesday, January 8 at 1:30 p.m., the Sixers will partner with The Food Trust to teach kids at John H. Taggart School (400 W. Porter St., Philadelphia, PA 19148) the importance of eating healthy foods. Members of the Sixers Dream Team, presented by Parx Casino®, and Sixers Flight Squad, presented by Lundy Law, will be in attendance.

Sixers players Thaddeus Young and Hollis Thompson will learn the game of squash and teach basketball to kids on Thursday, January 9 when they visit the Lenfest Center (3890 N. 10th St., 2nd floor, Philadelphia PA, 19140) at 4:30 p.m. At the event, the team will work with Squash Smarts – which uses squash to mentor local, at-risk youth – to help the players learn the game. Young and Thompson will then conduct a basketball clinic for children in the program.

The Sixers will host YMCA Night when they play the Detroit Pistons at the Wells Fargo Center on Friday, January 10 at 7:00 p.m. Approximately 1,000 youth basketball players participating in programs at the Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA will be in attendance, and the team will host a special autograph session for the youth players following the game (not open to the public). The Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA is a community partner of SIXERS STRONG (press release).

SIXERS STRONG FIT Week will be held in conjunction with NBA FIT Live Healthy Week, the league’s yearly initiative that highlights the importance of living healthy, active lives. At home and away games during the week, Sixers players will wear adidas/NBA FIT shooting shirts, headbands and wristbands.
