Sixers Charities to Make $25,000 Donation to Family Health Center

Philadelphia 76ers President Billy King announced today that Sixers Charities will donate $25,000 to the Eleventh Street Family Health Services of Drexel University. The donation will be allocated toward upgrading the Health Center’s fitness room, which is geared toward improving the health and wellness of the community. In recognition of the 76ers’ gift, the Health Center will rename its exercise room, “The 76ers Fitness Center.”

The 76ers Fitness Center will be upgraded with special signage and artwork, one Kids Gym, one Rio Grande II Gym, one stair climber, two treadmills, two elliptical trainers, two recumbent bikes, two stationary bikes, one set of Poerblock Dumbells and one weight tree rack. Officials have targeted August 2004 as the unveiling of the new 76ers Fitness Center.

“The 76ers and Comcast-Spectacor are extremely proud to help support the center,” King said. “It is a special facility that is dedicated to making the lives of those in its neighborhood better. We hope that our donation will enhance the fitness programs sponsored by the Health Center, and ultimately help improve the overall well being of residents.”

Located at 850 North 11th Street in Philadelphia, Eleventh Street Family Health Services, in partnership with the Philadelphia Housing Authority, has offered health care to residents of four public housing developments in the 11th Street Corridor in North Philadelphia since 1996. The Center provides primary medical care and health promotion/disease prevention programs to the community. Services are designed to reach people in the context of their community, family, and culture and strive to be free of economic barriers. This area of Philadelphia contains the highest percentage of unemployed individuals, and the highest percentage of individuals and families in poverty in Philadelphia. It also has the lowest median family income in the city - $13,000 per year - and 49 percent of the families live in poverty. As a result, the Health Center serves as a safety net provider, extending care to almost exclusively low income or uninsured clients.

The 76ers Fitness Center at the Health Center is a major hub of activity. It houses part of the Health and Wellness Program, an obesity prevention program of exercise and nutrition education for adolescents from 10-13 years old. The children meet three days a week and focus on lifestyle adjustments to help maintain a healthy lifestyle. The Heart and Soul Program is an aerobic exercise program, which meets two days per week and provides aerobics classes to area residents. A Physical Therapist from the Drexel College of Nursing and Health Professions hosts an Open Gym Program two days per week. Additionally, the 76ers Fitness Center houses the Health Club twice per week, a program that incorporates physical education for 11-14 year olds.
