Sixers Michael Carter-Williams Headlines Selections for BBVA Rising Stars Challenge Held During All-Star Weekend

PHILADELPHIA, PA. – JANUARY 29, 2014 – The NBA announced the list of participants for the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge today and Sixers rookie guard Michael Carter-Williams headlines the 18 first- and second-year players selected by the league’s assistant coaches, with each team submitting one ballot.  The game will be played on Friday, February 14, in New Orleans during NBA All-Star 2014.

Carter-Williams, who was the 11th overall pick by Philadelphia in the 2013 NBA Draft, leads all rookies in scoring (17.4 ppg), rebounding (5.6 rpg), assists (6.7 apg) and steals (2.41 spg).  He is looking to become just the third player dating back to 1950-51 to lead rookies in points per game, rebounds per game and assists per game, joining Oscar Robertson (1960-61) and Alvan Adams (1975-76).

In NBA history, the only rookies to average at least 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists for an entire season are Robertson, Magic Johnson (1979-80) and Steve Francis (1999-00).  The last players to average at least 17.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.00 steals in a single season were Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade in 2008-09.

Carter-Williams is joined in the player pool by fellow rookies Steven Adams (Oklahoma City), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee), Pero Antic (Atlanta), Trey Burke (Utah), Tim Hardaway, Jr. (New York), Victor Oladipo (Orlando), Kelly Olynyk (Boston) and Mason Plumlee (Brooklyn).

The sophomore class is represented by Harrison Barnes (Golden State), Bradley Beal (Washington), Anthony Davis (New Orleans), Andre Drummond (Detroit), Terrence Jones (Houston), Damian Lillard (Portland), Jared Sullinger (Boston), Jonas Valanciunas (Toronto) and Dion Waiters (Cleveland).

This marks the third straight year rookies and sophomores will be mixed together on teams. The BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge Draft is scheduled for Thursday, February 6, televised exclusively on TNT at 7 p.m. ET. General Managers for the teams will be announced at a later date.
