Villanueva, Paul Named T-Mobile Rookies of the Month

NEW YORK, Jan. 3, 2006 – Charlie Villanueva of the Toronto Raptors and Chris Paul of the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets today were named the Eastern and Western Conference T-Mobile Rookies of the Month, respectively, for games played in December.

Villanueva, the seventh overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, ranks third in scoring (14.2 ppg), third in field goal percentage (.527 percent), fourth in rebounding (4.9 rpg) and fifth in blocks (.62 bpg) among rookies. He led Toronto’s bench in scoring in 10 of 13 games played in December, and the team went 3-0 when he scored 19 or more points. Villanueva helped the Raptors improve from a 1-15 record in November to a 7-7 record in December.

Paul, the fourth overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, wins for the second consecutive month. He leads all rookies in scoring, rebounds, assists, steals and minutes, averaging 16.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 7.9 assists, 2.6 steals and 36.7 minutes during December. Paul ranks second overall in the NBA in steals and ninth in assists.

Dec. 2 at Atlanta: Scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds, three blocks, two assists and one steal in a 102-101 win against the Hawks.
Dec. 10 at Charlotte: Tallied 19 points, grabbed nine rebounds and made three steals in a 111-103 victory over the Bobcats.
Dec. 30 at Indiana: Recorded a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds in a 99-97 win over the Pacers.

Dec. 2 vs. Philadelphia: Scored 16 points and had nine assists, seven rebounds and two steals in an 88-86 win over the visiting 76ers.
Dec. 12 at Phoenix: Recorded 19 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals in a 91-87 victory over the Suns.
Dec. 18 vs. San Antonio: Recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds and added nine assists and five steals in an 89-76 win over the Spurs.

Other nominees for the Eastern and Western Conference T-Mobile Rookies of the Month were Houston’s Luther Head, Milwaukee’s Andrew Bogut, New York’s Channing Frye and Utah’s Deron Williams.
