Rookie Rankings - March 13, 2006
By John Schuhmann

Toronto fans, you have serious competition and it comes from within your own division. For the last couple of weeks, we have been bombarded with e-mail coming out of the state of Massachusetts in regard to one Ryan Gomes. He has been putting up big numbers and we've been talking about him, but he was not in our Top 10. We told you why last week (apparently some of you didn't read it, because we got even more e-mail since then) and this week, Gomes makes his Rookie Rankings debut at No. 8.

Don't stop writing, though! We want to hear what you think about this week's rankings? Should Gomes be higher? Lower? Did Channing Frye drop too quickly? Let us know.

Overall Rankings - The Road to ROY
1. CHRIS PAUL, G, NEW ORLEANS/OKLAHOMA CITY
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
36.1 16.3 5.4 8.0 2.21 0.07 .430 .304 .834
Last week: 1
The Hornets have lost six straight, and they're now looking at the playoff picture from the outside. Chris Paul thinks that may be what they need to get back on track. They have just two games this week, the first being a visit to San Antonio on Tuesday.
2. CHARLIE VILLANUEVA, F, TORONTO
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
27.4 12.6 5.9 1.0 0.79 0.79 .478 .327 .698
Last week: 2
Just when we thought Charlie Villanueva had a solid hold on the No. 2 spot, he hits a bit of a rough patch, shooting just .300 for the week, including 0-for-7 from downtown. He finished the week on a high note though, blocking Anthony Johnson's shot to seal Sunday's win over the Pacers.
3. ANDREW BOGUT, C, MILWAUKEE
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
28.8 9.0 7.4 2.2 0.65 1.00 .526 .000 .619
Last week: 3
It was a typical and solid week for Andrew Bogut. He averaged 10.0 points, 7.0 boards and 3.3 assists in three games, shooting .571 from the field. The Bucks have lost eight of their last 11 games though, and that has prompted coach Terry Stotts to think about starting Joe Smith over Bogut.
4. RAYMOND FELTON, G, CHARLOTTE
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
27.7 10.2 3.2 4.7 1.21 0.13 .390 .376 .709
Last week: 5
Since the All-Star break, Raymond Felton is the third best three-point shooter in the league, connecting on 21 of his 39 attempts from downtown, a .538 clip. Ahead of him are Jalen Rose and ...
5. DERON WILLIAMS, G, UTAH

Last week: 6
Deron Williams is the second best three-point shooter in the league since the break, making 23 of his 39 attempts from downtown, a .590 mark. Despite an off-night against the Mavs on Saturday, Williams is averaging 13.9 points and 5.1 assists in his last nine games.

MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
24.6 12.6 5.8 0.9 0.43 0.68 .478 .333 .829
Last week: 4
It has been almost a month since Channing Frye has played well in a close game and March has certainly not been his month.
7. SARUNAS JASIKEVICIUS, G, INDIANA
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
22.8 8.2 2.2 3.1 0.65 0.07 .411 .373 .894
Last week: 7
Sarunas Jasikevicius will see more time at the two with Fred Jones out indefinitely with a thumb injury. Saras really struggled this week, making just six of his 21 shots from the field as the Pacers dropped three of four.
8. RYAN GOMES, F, BOSTON
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
18.1 6.1 4.0 0.7 0.40 0.02 .510 .286 .716

Ryan Gomes makes his Rookie Rankings debut thanks to his fourth straight week of quality play in the Celtics' starting lineup. Gomes has only been in the rotation for 14 games, but he is already tied for fourth in double-doubles among rookies with five.

On the outside looking in:
Francisco Garcia (SAC), Luther Head (HOU), Rashad McCants (MIN), Salim Stoudamire (ATL)

Jose Calderon (TOR) is still bothered by the sore heel that caused him to miss three games back in December. He was in uniform, but did not play Sunday against Indiana.

Joey Graham (TOR) fans were happy to see him in the game down the stretch on Sunday against the Pacers. Graham played well, scoring eight points and grabbing seven boards in 25 minutes.

Rashad McCants (MIN) is now the rookie leader in three-point percentage at .395.

Donell Taylor (WAS) got his first career start on Tuesday against Boston, but played just 16 minutes.

Hakim Warrick (MEM) has been a solid part of the Grizzlies' rotation for a few weeks now.

LETTER OF THE WEEK
Just wanted to know what Rookie Report thought about Salim Stoudemire. Though he does score, he has attitude problems and he doensn't do much but score. Is he destined to be a career sixth man?
Freddy - Atlanta, Geo.

The first word that comes to mind when we see Salim Stoudamire play is "gunner." The guys is certainly not afraid to shoot and he provides what we like to call "instant offense" off the Atlanta bench. His defense needs work though, and he's not someone you want running your offense for extended minutes. Now, that doesn't mean that he'll never improve the other aspects of his game. He could certainly become a more well-rounded player in time. All rookies are facing the same question now that they've made it to the NBA: Are you satisfied?
