Rookie Rankings - January 9, 2006
By John Schuhmann
|
For the first time all season, we feel we have 10 strong rookies on the list. Until now, that 10th spot was always in flux, going to whomever played well that week. Now, Nate Robinson is playing more consistently and the Knicks are actually winning a few games. Even with David Lee putting up some very impressive numbers and Danny Granger showing why he was considered one of the best players in the draft, Robinson has a stronger hold on the No. 10 spot than anyone has had all season.
Of course, that could change at any point. We thought Chris Paul had a stranglehold on the No. 1 spot until Friday...

Chris Paul tore ligaments in his right thumb on Friday and will miss at least two weeks of action. The Hornets have already showed how much they need him, losing in Atlanta the next night. Will this affect Paul's candidacy for Rookie of the Year? Well, if he only misses a couple of weeks and comes back healthy, it will be difficult to unseat him as the top rook. If recovery takes longer or if the injury lingers throughout the season, the race for ROY opens up quite a bit.

Channing Frye is still not getting major burn anymore for the Knicks, but you have to be impressed with the fact that he scored 45 points and grabbed 12 boards in just 47 minutes of playing time, shooting 15-of-19 from the floor this week. The Knicks have won three straight and each of their rookies has been a major factor.

After we bumped him back up to No. 3 last week, Charlie Villanueva made us second-guess our decision with two-point, 0-for-3 performace in Atlanta. He recovered well though, averaging 22.5 points on 18-of-26 shooting in wins over Orlando and Houston and while he shot just 3-for-11 in Sunday's loss to the Nets, he did grab seven boards in 23 minutes.

The Bucks are struggling right now, losing three straight in their division, but they can't ask of much more from Andrew Bogut, who had another solid week. Bogut recorded his third double-double of the season on Wednesday and has scored in double-figures in three straight games for the first time in his career.

Deron Williams seems to have recovered from his recent struggles, helping the Jazz to two nice wins over the Lakers and Pistons this week. He may have needed a few games to adjust to coming off the bench again.

Hopefully, for Sarunas Jasikevicius' sake (heck, for the sake of everyone in Indiana), the Ron Artest situation will be ironed out soon and Saras can have a more defined role. He has stated his preference. He wants to play the point.

After missing three straight games with a bruised heel, Jose Calderon came back for Friday's win over the Rockets. That missed free throw that allowed Vince Carter to beat the Raps on Sunday will hurt for a while.

Here's a crazy stat. At home, Salim Stoudamire is shooting .324 from three-point range and .582 from inside the arc. On the road, he is shooting .446 from downtown and .436 from two. Try to figure that one out.

Averaging 10.6 points per game on .690 shooting as a starter, Ike Diogu has been deemed "untouchable" in trade talks. The Warriors need his strength down low and feel he is their future on the frontline.

Nate Robinson's play is a lot more consistent now that he is a regular starter for Larry Brown. His numbers have increased across the board each month and Brown is now willing to be patient with him even when he turns the ball over seven times like he did in Friday's win over the Wizards.

NOTEWORTHY
|
|
Danny Granger (IND) is averaging 11.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game as a starter.
In five games as a starter, David Lee (NYK) is averaging 8.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, while shooting an incredible .708 from the field. He hit the game-winning shot to beat the Sonics on Sunday.
New Sonics coach Bob Hill has returned John Petro (SEA) to the starting lineup and he grabbed 21 boards in three games this week.

LETTER OF THE WEEK
|
I'm really happy with the new roster rules and D-League system. A lot of players are really getting the chance to improve their game instead of rotting at the end of the bench. My man Ersan Ilyasova is really developing nicely. He should fit in smoothly next year with the likely retirement of Kukoc. My question is why hasn't a player like Bracey Wright been called up? He's clearly ready and the T-Wolves could use some scoring from their backcourt.
Decker - Milwaukee, Wisc.
While the Wolves may indeed need some more offense from their backcourt, it's hard to say that Wright would get consistent playing time behind Jaric, Hudson, Hassell and McCants. We were very interested to see how teams would use the new D-League setup when it was first announced. It seems that the success of guys like Wright and Ilyasova has inspired more teams to use it as the season goes on.
