Rookie Rankings - December 19, 2005
By John Schuhmann

As the season goes on, it will be more difficult for new players to enter the rankings, but right now, that No. 10 spot is completely up for grabs. A different player has occupied the 10th spot every week so far this season. See for yourself:

Salim Stoudamire (preseason), Sergei Monia, Sarunas Jasikevicius, Daniel Ewing, José Calderón, Sean May and Nate Robinson.

This week, Joey Graham makes his debut in the Rookie Rankings, pushing Nate Robinson to the side. So, the Raptors have the worst record in the league, but they now have three rookies in the Top 10. Meanwhile, rookie No. 1 has his team on a nice run.

If you missed it last week, check out our Q & A with Sean May and Raymond Felton. May occupied that No. 10 spot a couple of weeks ago and could get back there very soon. Make sure to stay tuned to the Rookie Report for more features on the 2005-06 rookie class.

Note: Next week's Rookie Rankings will come on Tuesday. Happy Holidays!

Overall Rankings - The Road to ROY
1. CHRIS PAUL, G, NEW ORLEANS/OKLAHOMA CITY
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
37.2 16.7 6.2 7.1 2.29 0.04 .450 .255 .793
Last week: 1
This may have been Chris Paul's best week of the season. The Hornets beat the Suns, Clippers and Spurs (they also lost to Phoenix) with Paul leading the way. Check out his number for the week on the right. On Sunday, he was just one assist shy of a triple-double while turning the ball over just once as the Hornets shocked the champs. There's still room on the CP3 bandwagon. Climb aboard.
2. CHANNING FRYE, C, NEW YORK
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
27.9 14.8 6.5 1.0 0.59 0.95 .514 .500 .870
Last week: 2
Channing Frye is the lone bright spot on a Knicks team that has lost six straight. Frye had a huge game against fellow rookie Andrew Bogut on Monday night, scoring 30 points on 14-of-18 from the field. Bogut couldn't stay with Frye on the perimeter and Frye rained down mid-range jumpers all night.
3. CHARLIE VILLANUEVA, F, TORONTO
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
27.3 12.7 5.9 1.1 0.79 0.75 .456 .321 .652
Last week: 3
After Wednesday's loss to Chicago, Raptor coach Sam Mitchell criticized Charlie Villanueva, who played just nine minutes. Villanueva took the criticism well and responded by averaging 16.5 points and eight boards in the next two games.
4. DERON WILLIAMS, G, UTAH
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
30.9 12.3 3.0 4.9 0.87 0.22 .400 .350 .709
Last week: 4
Deron Williams missed Monday's win over Detroit with an ear infection, but returned to put up solid numbers in two wins and a loss. He made just one of his 10 attempts from downtown for the week though. He's a playmaker who needs to be a little more consistent with his jumper.
5. SARUNAS JASIKEVICIUS, G, INDIANA
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
23.8 10.0 2.6 3.0 1.14 0.14 .468 .432 .915
Last week: 5
With Ron Artest's absence, Sarunas Jasikevicius has moved to the two spot in the Pacers lineup. He had a key steal and pair of free throws in Indiana's win in New York on Saturday.
6. ANDREW BOGUT, C, MILWAUKEE
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
26.8 8.1 7.1 2.2 0.91 0.95 .527 .000 .579
Last week: 6
Andrew Bogut isn't going to score points like Paul or Frye. His teammates are too good. He gives the Bucks a solid presence down low and he doesn't hurt them at all. This week, Bogut made 12 of his 21 shots from the field including 6-of-9 in Friday's win over Boston, in which he also dished out five assists.
7. JOSÉ CALDERÓN, G, TORONTO
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
29.8 7.0 3.0 6.4 0.96 0.04 .434 .161 .861
Last week: 7
José Calderón missed Sunday's game with a heel bruise and is listed as day-to-day. He played well on Friday, scoring 15 points, dishing out 11 assists and grabbing seven boards in a loss to Golden State.
8. LUTHER HEAD, G, HOUSTON
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
26.9 9.0 3.4 2.4 1.05 0.05 .406 .433 .656
Last week: 9
Luther Head helped the Rockets to a win in Golden State on Wednesday by sending the game to overtime with a three-pointer at the end of regulation. He grabbed six boards in each of the Rockets' two games at the Staples Center this weekend and added 16 points in the win over the Lakers on Sunday.
9. SALIM STOUDAMIRE, G, ATLANTA
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
20.9 10.3 2.0 1.3 0.52 0.13 .449 .425 .865
Last week: 8
Salim Stoudamire's role has diminished slightly in the last couple of weeks. He still gives the Hawks some instant offense off the bench, but he isn't being used as much down the stretch as he was earlier in the season.
10. JOEY GRAHAM, F, TORONTO
MPG PPG RPG APG SPG BPG FG% 3P% FT%
20.3 6.9 3.2 0.8 0.46 0.08 .471 .276 .843
Last week: unranked
Joey Graham seems to be back in the favor of Raptors coach Sam Mitchell, starting in place of fellow rookie Calderon on Sunday. For the week, Graham averaged 10 points per game while shooting .520 from the field and playing his usual solid defense.
NOTEWORTHY
The Artest situation in Indiana creates more playing time for Danny Granger (IND). Granger scored 12 points and grabbed six boards in Saturday's win in New York.
Shavlik Randolph (PHI) has worked his way into the Sixers rotation and grabbed 31 rebounds in just 65 minutes this week.
Nate Robinson (NYK) drops out of the Top 10 this week. Robinson was deactivated for Saturday's game against Indiana in favor of fellow rookie David Lee.

LETTER OF THE WEEK
I just would like to know who you think is the most exciting rookie this season. I live in Toronto and I can only afford a few games a year. I love to watch the rookies play so who would you go out and see? Let's have a couple of choices.
John - Toronto, Ont.

Well, you have three rookies that are fun to watch right there in Toronto, so you can't go wrong with any game you choose. If rookies are your thing, though, here would be my choices:
1. April 2 - NO/Okla. City
2. Jan. 15 or Feb. 3 - New York
3. Mar. 12 - Indiana
4. Mar. 17 - Milwaukee
