On the Run
Houston, TX - It began as a steady stream toward the finish line. What followed was a flood.
More than two thousand Houstonians, ranging in age groups from “Under 15” to “Over 70”, took part in the 11th annual Rockets 5K Run presented by Bowen, Miclette & Britt during a day that provided the perfect backdrop for an event that seems to get bigger and better every year.
13 winners claimed the top spot in each respective age group of the men's and women's divisions. But all who took part can claim to be winners as each participant received one ticket voucher to select Rockets home games, in addition to entrance to the free food and entertainment during the Post Race Party presented by UnitedHealthcare.
"We put this on every year to get Houston in shape," said Sr. Promotions Coordinator Leilani Borbon. "It's for a great cause and also a unique experience to finish at center court inside Toyota Center."
This year's event also featured a 2-mile walk for those in search of a lower intensity workout, as well as the Kids' 1K, making the day's event perfect for all ages.
All courses took runners through several blocks of midtown Houston, before turning back toward Toyota Center. The final legs then went underneath the Tundra Garage and the arena, allowing the participants to emerge on the Rockets home court—32 feet below street level.
Proceeds from Saturday’s event benefiting the USO. USO-Houston lifts the spirits of America's troops and their families in Greater Houston through USO Travel Centers at Bush Intercontinental and Hobby Airports that serve nearly 35,000 troops and their families annually, as well as through morale-boosting and family-strengthening programs targeting the 8,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen and their families stationed in Greater Houston.
