Rockets Sign Peter Cornell

HOUSTON, Sept. 17, 2003 - The Houston Rockets have signed center Peter Cornell, General Manager Carroll Dawson announced today. The 6-11, 245-pound center will participate in Rockets training camp, which begins on Monday, Sept. 29.

Last season, Cornell averaged 8.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 35 games with the North Charleston Lowgators of the National Development Basketball League. He led the NBDL with a field goal percentage of .594. He also ranked fifth among league leaders in blocked shots and 10th in rebounds. On Jan. 31 at Huntsville, he set a NBDL regular season single-game high with seven blocked shots.

Cornell has previously participated in training camps with the Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Lakers, and New Jersey Nets. He has played in several developmental leagues, including the ABA, USBL and IBA. Cornell also played in Yugoslavia during the 2001-02 season.

In two seasons at Loyola Marymount, Cornell averaged 6.2 points and 4.4 rebounds. He averaged career highs of 8.0 points and 5.3 rebounds as a junior after averaging 4.5 points in his first collegiate season. He spent one year at the University of Puget Sound before transferring to Loyola Marymount.
