Rockets use preseason opener to help, honor military families
HOUSTON - The Rockets are ready for their preseason opener. Whats more, theyre ready to say thank you and pay their respects to the men and women who have devoted their lives to this country.
Saturday night, owner Leslie Alexander and the Rockets have pledged to support 100 military families who need assistance during the holidays by donating proceeds of all single game ticket sales from their preseason opener against the San Antonio Spurs.
The club is partnering with the Veterans Administration Hospital to identify families of service members who have been wounded while serving in recent wars. Proceeds will also benefit military from the 1st Battalion 23rd Marines who recently completed a tour of duty in Afghanistan, as well members of 1/158th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion who just returned from serving in Iraq.
All funds will be used to purchase gift cards for each of the 100 families. In addition, more than 1500 game tickets will be donated to military families to attend the game.
Service members will be honored on-court throughout the evening as well.
Saturday's initiative is part of Rockets Give Back, a season-long program to follow through on the franchise's mandate to make a significant positive difference in the Houston community.
