“I tried to wear 15 in college. For some reason Coach (John) Thompson didn’t want any of the big men to wear a low number. Everybody had to start at 30 and up. When I said 15 they said, okay, we’ll give you 55. I had no one to look up to for a role model, so I didn’t have someone to look for for a number. They gave me 55, and I’ve worn it ever since. Now I see a lot of kids coming out of college wearing 55, and they say they wear it because of Mutombo, and that brings more joy to me than anything else.”
