HOUSTON -- Bonzi Wells couldn't pass up an opportunity to play for his former coach.
The veteran swingman agreed to return to the Rockets on Monday, opting to honor the final season of his contract and forgo testing the free agent market.
The decision ended weeks of speculation about whether Wells would remain in Houston and play for his former coach, Rick Adelman. Adelman, who was hired by the Rockets in May, coached Wells for one season in Sacramento.
"Bonzi's return adds experience and talent to the roster," Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said. "Bonzi is determined to show Rockets fans and coach Adelman that he can help the team improve on last season."
The Rockets are hoping Wells' return will bolster a bench that struggled to consistently generate offense during the 2006-07 season.
The 6-foot-5 guard/forward was expected to be the team's sixth man last season, but he never fit into the role because of injuries and absenses. Coming off a dazzling postseason run with the Kings in 2005-06, he played in only 28 games with the Rockets last season. Wells averaged 7.8 points and 4.3 rebounds before ending up on the inactive roster for the final 12 games of the regular season and playoffs.
