Rockets Sign Adrian Griffin

August 7, 2003 - The Houston Rockets have signed free agent Adrian Griffin to a contract, general manager Carroll Dawson announced today. The 6-5, 230-pound guard/forward has averaged 5.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.15 steals in four NBA seasons with Boston and Dallas.

“Adrian brings a defensive tenacity to the floor,” Dawson said. “He is a tireless worker and his hustle will provide a spark for our team. Our main focus during this offseason has been to add players that will be a good fit in our system and Adrian is just that.”

Last season, Griffin averaged 4.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.04 steals in 74 games with the Mavericks, starting 48 times. He led Dallas with 2.69 steals per 48 minutes, ranking ninth overall in the NBA. On the Mavericks, Griffin ranked third with 77 steals, fifth with 264 rebounds and fifth with 105 assists. His free throw percentage of .844 placed him fourth on his squad. He scored in double figures five times, including a season-high 17 points vs. Memphis on March 1. He led Dallas in rebounds three times, including a season-high 12 rebounds vs. Boston on Jan. 10. In the 2003 NBA Playoffs, Griffin averaged 2.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 8.7 minutes in 15 games. He scored a playoff career-high 15 points vs. Sacramento in Dallas’ Western Conference Semifinals Game 2 win on May 8.

Griffin joins the Rockets following two-year stints with both the Celtics

and the Mavericks. He began his NBA career in Boston after playing in the Continental Basketball Association, the Italian A-1 League and the United States Basketball League. The Seton Hall graduate signed with Boston after winning the 1999 CBA MVP award and averaged 6.7 points with career highs of 5.2 rebounds and 1.61 steals during his rookie season with the Celtics. Following the first month of his NBA career, he received Co-Rookie of the Month honors for November 1999. The following season, Griffin averaged 2.1 points and 2.0 rebounds in his final year with the Celtics. He signed with Dallas prior to the 2001-2002 season and averaged a career-high 7.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and a team-leading 1.29 steals in his first year with the Mavericks.
