The Houston Rockets have designated forward Clarence Weatherspoon for the amnesty provision under the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement, General Manager Carroll Dawson announced today. The provision allows a team to remove a player’s contract amount from the team’s salary cap for purposes of calculating the luxury tax.

“These types of moves are never easy,” said Dawson. “We really appreciate what Clarence did for the organization the past two seasons. This decision was made in order to give us more financial flexibility under the terms of the new collective bargaining agreement.”

Weatherspoon averaged 3.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 13.1 minutes in 40 games last season. The Rockets acquired Weatherspoon from the New York Knicks on December 30, 2003.
