The Houston Rockets are taking dance to a whole new..er..smaller level. The Rockets game presentation department held inaugural auditions Sunday, July 23 for the Little Dippers, the brand new elite kids' dance team that will perform at home games during the 2006-2007 season! Nearly 200 boys and girls, ages 6-14, showcased their skills at the audition, which was held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Memorial Hermann HBU Wellness Center on Highway 59 at Beechnut.
The day featured a brief warm-up, a one hour teaching session during which the kids a learned a 60 second dance routine from Rockets Power Dancer and Comets Team NRGY members, and a two hour audition where the kids were split into groups of five to perform in front of a panel of judges. The day ended with a “special skills” session where some kids with breaking and tumbling skills had an additional opportunity to impress the judging committee.
Over the next few weeks, the final team will be selected and will begin rehearsing for the season. The Little Dippers will perform energetic jazz, novelty, cheer and hip hop routines to upbeat music at several home games throughout the year. Team pictures and the group's performance schedule will be showcased on rockets.com in the coming weeks.
The Little Dippers are managed by Rockets/Comets Dance Coach Susie Boudwin, and coached by Rockets Power Dancers Carrie B (head coach) and Carrie M (assistant coach). For more information on the team, please contact the Rockets/Comets dance hotline at 713-758-7450.
