Charity of the Month: Hermann Park Conservancy

Founded in 1992 as Friends of Hermann Park, Hermann Park Conservancy millions of dollars each year to enhance and maintain the Park. The Conservancy also manages the design of projects, and then shares construction costs with the City of Houston. Thanks to the generous financial support of foundations, corporations, and individuals, the Conservancy has raised over $115 million for improvement projects in Hermann Park.

The Conservancy is also responsible for extensive reforestation efforts and maintenance initiatives in Hermann Park. Visit their website at


Dwight Howard Wins NBA Community Assist Award

Dwight Howard received the NBA's March Kia Community Assist Award in recognition of his charitable contributions and efforts in the Greater Houston area, including the launch of his "Block Out Violence" campaign.

The D12 Foundation's "Block Out Violence" Program is a grassroots, student driven competition focused on promoting non-violence, anti-bullying, respect and acceptance, with the goal of creating safe campuses and ultimately, safe communities.

Congratulations to Cypress Lakes High School and Hodges Bend Middle School! They exhibited the most creative and impactful campaigns that generated school-wide participation and have been named "D12 Block Out Violence Schools." For their efforts, Dwight Howard himself will be hosting a "Block Party" rally at their respective schools.




Buffalo Soldiers Honored

In Recognition of America's rich and proud heritage of African-Americans who serve in the United States Military, the Houston Rockets and Bowen, Miclette & Britt honored members of the Houston Chapter of Buffalo Soldiers. Recognized were the following soldiers who served in military installments from WWII through the Vietnam War:

Korean War Veterans - Sgt Major 1st Class James Williams, Sgt Roy Smith
Vietnam- Captain Paul J. Matthews, Sgt. Cleveland Burrell, Sgt. Doc Brown, Corporal Oscar Ray
World War II - Sgt. Lamar Yarborough, Sgt. Hayward Jones (both amongst the last living members of the original Buffalo Soldiers)
