Clutch Speaks
A regular column written by the Rockets Bear himself

February 10, 2004

What a month it was for Houston!

Simply put, the best Super Bowl ever! This city was just nuts Super Bowl week. It was like the whole town just turned into one big party.

Even better than that were the star-studded Rockets games leading up to the big game. Here are just some of the stars who I performed skits with at Rockets games the week prior to the Super Bowl - Adam Sandler, Nelly, Donovan McNabb, Jermaine Depree, Puff Daddy (or is it P-Diddy now?), the whole offensive line from the Carolina Panthers, and of course all the Rockets fans who are all stars to me.

My favorite was setting up Happy Gilmore himself for a hockey stick putt. Unfortunately he missed, but he was a good sport about it.

On Sunday I even got to go to the game. Although Sir Pur, mascot for the Carolina Panthers, and Patriot Pat, mascot for the New England Patriots, were a little asleep at the wheel in the enthusiasm department, I saw the best football game of my nine-year-old life. I was really hoping the game would go to overtime so that Houstonians could say that we hosted the only Super Bowl overtime. Even without that, it was a claw-biter.

I'm looking forward to a big month. This Thursday and Friday, February 12 and 13, I will be delivering Clutch-Grams and visiting Rockets fans all over the Houston area on behalf of their sweethearts. Happy Valentine's Day!

As soon as I'm done playing Cupid, I'm off to Los Angles for the 2004 NBA All-Star Game and Jam Session. L.A. has never seen a star this bright. By the way, I'm taking Yao and Steve along with me.

The following weekend I'm headed to Memphis for my good buddy Grizz's birthday party and then straight to the University of Delaware for a basketball game.

In case you didn't know, my birthday is Sunday, March 7. There will be a celebration during the Rockets vs. Mavericks game, which starts at noon. It is brought to us by Segway who will be providing many fun toys for my fellow furballs to play with.

You don't want to miss the halftime show. I promise it will be even better than last year's stilt boxing matches. Make sure you show up early because the first 5,000 fans receive a Me in the Box. For those of you who don't speak first person mascot, that translates into a Clutch in the Box. It looks like a Jack in the Box only with Clutch instead of some clown. Well, I guess you could call me a clown, but you know what I mean.

Got to go for now. Remember BE BIG and I hope to see you at a Rockets home game at Toyota Center soon. Best Swishes!

P.S. I'm looking forward to seeing many of you Houston-area children in the next few months for our TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) rallies. SLAM DUNK TAKS!
