December 10, 2003

What a great month. A whole bunch of awesome things happened this month, the best of which was a trip on behalf of the NBA to Beijing, China with six of my Power Dancers buddies.

The journey took place over Thanksgiving week. Our official purpose was to entertain at a press conference the NBA was holding. They want to showcase and sample some of the entertainment from back here in the States. Our performance went over great and was very well received. And, no, I didn't create any international incidents or get thrown in jail.

After our work duties were completed, the NBA treated us to a tour of the city including stops at The Great Wall of China, the Emperor's Summer Palace, a shopping market, and my favorite - many many local restaurants where I stuffed my belly with authentic Chinese food.

The Great Wall was bigger than I had ever pictured in my mind. The Power Dancers and I got into a huge snowball fight on the Wall, which I regrettably lost. Six on one isn't exactly fair, but then again getting hit with a snowball while dressed in a Power Dancers outfit isn't very fair either.

I also got to visit a few of my panda bear relatives. None of them had heard of my alter ego, Yao Bear. Next time I go over there I'm going to bring Yao Bear with me so all the Chinese panda bears can meet an American panda bear. It was my first time to China and I had a blast. Thanks NBA!

Another great thing that happened this month was the launch of the new Rockets Kids Club for which I am the spokesbear. If you have not checked it out yet, you really need to. The sign up instructions and details on membership can be accessed by clicking here. It is only $19.95 per year.

Just some of the things you get for those dues are:

  • A ticket to a Rockets home game
  • An exclusive Kids Club T-shirt
  • A yearly highlights video of all my antics and skits from the Rockets games
  • The yearly premium item that the Rockets give away at a game that is in my likeness
  • Opportunities to shoot free throws on the Rockets court and participate in a Rockets commercial
  • And best of all, this news letter e-mailed directly to you monthly.

If that isn't worth the price of admission, I don't know what is!

The third neat thing that happened this month is that the Team Shop at Toyota Center finally got the little beanie dolls of me in stock. I get quite a few e-mails from fans each month asking me where they can buy a doll of me. I can finally give them an answer. Me beanie dolls are now on sale at the Team Shop which is open at all Rockets home games and every Wednesday and Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. through the holiday season.

Lastly, I was voted the co-best mascot of 2003 by gameops.com. Gameops.com is the leading sports entertainment web site and is used by teams from all professional sports and colleges alike. Voting is open all year through the beginning of December when results are posted and all mascots both professional and amateur are eligible.

I share the honor with Squatch, mascot for the Seattle Sonics, who is a close friend and colleague. Looks like all that money I spent paying people off final came back to me.

I promised one of my biggest fans, D.J., that I would answer some questions he e-mailed me this past month so here we go.

Q: What do you think of the new uniforms?
    A:
I love them. I think the logo is great and the new colors and materials are very sleek.

Q: There are many new things this season, but out of all the new things what's your favorite?
    A:
My cave itself. Toyota Center is great!

Q: Were all of your performances for Red Ribbon week a success?
    A:
    Yes!

Q: When do you think the bigest night of the season will be?
    A:
The night we win the NBA championship!

If you have questions you'd like answered too, send me an e-mail.

I hope everyone out there has a great holiday season and gets to spend time with their loved ones. If you have any extra time, stop by a Rockets game and I'll give you a free high five. Talk to you next year.

    Until next time. Be BIG!
