![]() A perimeter-oriented team didn't do much to help itself up front. But draftee Greg Monroe looked good to the experts this summer, so that's something. And it's not like he'll get lost in the depth up front for the Pistons.

![]() Tracy McGrady has an individual agenda -- prove he still can play in a manner somewhat reminiscent of a guy known as T-Mac -- that shouldn't get in the way of the Pistons' modest ambitions.

![]() This club is a long way from it's Dennis Rodman-inspired or Ben Wallace-defined defensive identities. John Kuester was Cleveland's offensive mastermind, not its mosquito defense maven. This team has no stopper mentality.

![]() When preseason reports focus on a lottery team's depth, that's just code for "There's no pecking order here" or "The mediocrity runs deep." The Pistons aren't so much deep as, oh, even in talents through about 10 players.

![]() Kuester has a tough job, making believers not only of the fans but of the fellows on this roster. Detroit is three drafts and offseasons away from being taken seriously. If it gets there.

Summary
Things are worse in Pistons land than people wanted to let on. The franchise that was supposed to be kept in the Davidson family went on the shopping block, and the B- or C-level signings of Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva before the 2009-10 season took the Pistons out of this summer's shopping spree.
We're assuming that Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince won't be around all season, and that Rodney Stuckey will take a stride forward after last season's half-step backward. Gordon, assuming he doesn't conflict with McGrady's need for the ball, should be able to settle in and boost his impact and shooting percentage. But unless McGrady goes Ponce de Leon in the northern Detroit 'burbs, this will remain a Palace in need of real royalty.
