2009-10 Season Stats
Carlos Boozer fills a Bulls need (low-block scoring) that dates back to their trade of Elton Brand. Kurt Thomas has the grit and demeanor to back up Joakim Noah but lacks some of Brad Miller's skills.
Ronnie Brewer was a nice Plan B acquisition, maybe even better than Plan A target J.J. Redick, as an all-around player. Kyle Korver will spread defenses and C.J. Watson and Keith Bogans are solid off the bench.
The most respected defensive guru in the NBA now is the Bulls' head coach. If anyone can tap into Derrick Rose's athletic ability, and exploit Noah's skills there, it's Tom Thibodeau. Next pupil: Boozer.
Look, Kirk Hinrich was too pricey for a third guard for the Bulls' taste. He helps any team. But Korver, Watson, Bogans, Thomas are solid additions and undervalued Taj Gibson didn't wind up being dealt.
When's the last time an assistant coach from one team gets hired by another team coming off two consecutive playoff appearances? This is a great opportunity for both Thibodeau and the Bulls.
It's not fair to judge a Christmas haul by what shows up under the other guy's tree. The Bulls entered free agency with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in their crosshairs and missed out on all three. But their annexing of the Utah Jazz -- adding Boozer, Korver and Brewer -- and the other rotation players they added wasn't exactly like unwrapping a bunch of underwear.
It probably meant little at the time, but when Rose wouldn't openly lobby for or recruit James, it was viewed as a show of respect for Luol Deng, his Chicago teammate at small forward. But there seemed to be a little resistance from Rose to yielding his status as the Bulls' anchor player -- which could make for some terrific showdowns between the Heat and the Bulls. The point guard is on the verge of becoming the next Wade.
Thibodeau's biggest challenge will be acting the role of head coach after 20 years as a sidekick. A quick start will be important as he puts his stamp on this team.
