Frontcourt
B+
What's not to like about the bruising big boys who went to the Western Conference finals for the first time in history? Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, do it again.
Backcourt
B+
Mike Conley is on the cusp of becoming an All-Star, Tony Allen is back to keep the teeth in the Grind House and Mike Miller's shot is home again.
Defense
A
When your home court is called the Grind House, that means defense is your calling card and the Grizzlies play it hard and rugged and tough.
Bench
B
If there was one thing lacking in the Memphis attack last season it was a 3-point shooter. Now that Miller has returned, that should no longer be a problem.
Coaching
C
Rookie coach Dave Joerger steps in to replace the best coach in franchise history and the heat is on from the start to keep up the defensive intensity and identity.
Summary

This would seem to be a summer of leftover warmth from last season, a time of stability, of strength, of consistency, of feeling that all that's required is to open the doors to training camp and pick up where the Grizzles left off after the best season in franchise history. But after rolling all the way to the Western Conference finals, that one big question looms: Can the Grizzlies keep right on being the snarling, bruising, in-your-face Grizzlies without the man who brought them that identity? Lionel Hollins was not re-signed by ownership, which evidently thinks teams coach themselves.

Now the job belongs to Dave Joerger, his first time in the head coach's seat and the scrutiny will be intense and the criticism sharp any time that Memphis gives up an easy layup. The rotation of Zach Randolph, Marc Gasol, Tayshaun Prince, Mike Conley and Tony Allen is solid and fearsome and the return of Mike Miller to Memphis should plug that gap for an outside shooter. But the Hollins question will be there from Day One.
