The league's best defensive player over the last six seasons -- Kevin Garnett -- and the Celtics' best offensive player over that same span -- Paul Pierce -- are gone. Jared Sullinger and Kelly Olynyk lead the youth movement.

D

BckCourt
The Celtics don't know if they'll have a healthy Rajon Rondo to start the season, but they do know that Avery Bradley will be good to go. The pair started just 11 games together last season. They still don't have a back-up for Rondo.

B

Defense
The Celtics will have a couple of good defenders -- Bradley and Gerald Wallace -- to keep things respectable on this end, but not only is Garnett gone, but so are the coaches -- Doc Rivers and Mike Longabardi -- who ran Boston's vaunted defense.

C

Bench
The Celtics' bench isn't awful, but the departure of Garnett, Pierce and Jason Terry makes it weaker. The good news is that a backcourt combination of MarShon Brooks and Jordan Crawford could be very entertaining.

C

Coaching
With a six-year contract, Brad Stevens, who arrives with a great reputation, will be given the opportunity to develop into a great coach. But he won't be Doc Rivers in Year 1. This will be a process.

Summary

Danny Ainge finally pulled the trigger on the Celtics' rebuild, sending Garnett, Pierce and Terry to Brooklyn for Kris Humphries, Wallace, Brooks, Keith Bogans and picks. It wasn't a complete roster reset, because the Celtics still have some big salaries and decent players on the books beyond the coming season.

Still, they're probably not going to be very good on either end of the floor, having lost their anchors on each. This was a bad offensive team even before Rondo got hurt last season. And it was a bad defensive team whenever Garnett went to the bench.

Stevens will bring a new system, however. So, even though there are a lot of returning players, this will be a brand new team, with a different identity than the Celtics we've watched over the last six years. Expectations will be low as Ainge continues to reshape the roster, but you never know who will make the most of a bigger role.
