A broken hand couldn't keep Anthony Davis off floor long and now he's hometown candidate for the New Orleans All-Star Game. The loss of Ryan Anderson (back) is devastating.
Jrue Holiday and Eric Gordon found a way to co-exist in the Pelicans' offense, but now Holiday is sidelined and the team is scrambling.
There have been personnel changes and injuries. Davis blocks shots. But even a name change to Pelicans can't make them better than 29th in defense.
Reserves were weakened when big gun Anderson had to start due to injuries. Now he's sidelined with herniated disc. Tyreke Evans has had his moments.
Injuries have certainly taken their toll on a young Pelicans roster, but there must come a time when Monty Williams gets team to play good defense he talks about.

There is plenty of reason to be excited about the huge step forward made by forward Davis in his second NBA season. A summer in the gym and also working out with USA Basketball enabled him to take a giant leap in both confidence and production and has eliminated any smallest doubt that he can be a franchise player. The fears about the guard trio of Holiday, Eric Gordon and Evans squabbling over the ball never came true. Anderson showed that he could do more than just shoot the ball before he hurt his back.

One huge trouble has been injuries. With Anderson already sidelined indefinitely, now Holiday is on the shelf with a stress fracture in his foot. In addition, the Pelicans still have a glaring hole up front as Al-Farouq Aminu has simply not taken advantage of every chance he's been given. And for a team that is led by a great shot blocker and rim protector in Davis, coach Williams has not been able to get this group to show a bit of interest in playing team defense. Same old song from the past two years and it keeps them from even dreaming about the playoffs.
