Frontcourt
C
Kenneth Faried's production has dipped and missing Danilo Gallinari (now out for the season) is a severe blow. JaVale McGee's early injury forced undersized J.J. Hickson to start at center.
Backcourt
B+
Ty Lawson's playing at an All-Star clip (18.0 ppg, 8.9 apg) despite a new scheme and a lack of dynamic scorers around him. Randy Foye and Nate Robinson have shot the 3-ball well.
Defense
C-
Effort sways as focus wanes and that's reflected in the team's roller coaster swings. Two weeks ago, coach Brian Shaw's philosophies seemed to be sinking in, then came another deflation.
Bench
B
Shaw spreads the minutes and the bench is tied for second in scoring. Lots of working parts, especially in the backcourt where cagey veteran Andre Miller is the odd man out.
Coaching
C+
Tough gig replacing George Karl and losing a top defender in Andre Iguodala in free agency and Gallinari to injury. Shaw battled Miller and must keep pushing for a total buy-in.
Summary

It's difficult to remember that this was the No. 3 seed a season ago. It seems much longer. But it's also worth remembering that the Nuggets exited the playoffs in the first round for the eighth time in nine seasons. Shaw waited a long time to get his head coaching start and he walked into a delicate situation that also included a roster shakeup and key injuries. This week's news that Gallinari will miss the entire season after needing a second surgery to repair his right knee is a significant blow to a hopeful playoff charge. Denver has alternated between hot and cold streaks, including a winning streak of seven games followed by an eight-game losing streak. With a league-high eight losses after leading after three quarters, perhaps the eventual return of McGee can solidify the defense and help Denver hold on for a few more wins.
