Frontcourt
B
Things had to get better with the return of healthy Dirk Nowitzki this season. The search for a center continues and neither Samuel Dalembert or DeJuan Blair are the answer.
Backcourt
C
Free agent signees Monta Ellis and Jose Calderson have delivered all the offensive punch the Mavs hoped. But they still can't guard anybody.
Defense
D+
Sometimes the Mavs defense is so bad that coach Rick Carlisle probably wants to grow his hair back so that he could pull it out again.
Bench
C
When your best reserve is 37-year-old Vince Carter it means the cupboard is bare. A healthy Brandan Wright could help in second half.
Coaching
A
The fact that the Mavs have heads solidly above the .500 mark and are hanging tough in West playoff race speaks volumes about Rick Carlisle.
Summary

You have to figure owner Mark Cuban was living in a holiday season fantasy world when he said the jury was still out on whether Dwight Howard or Monta Ellis was the top free agent signing in the NBA last summer. Or he was trying to convince Dirk Nowitzki that wasn't another season with just coal in his stocking.

Dallas can scrap and hustle and run and score and fight and claw its way into one of the bottom two playoff spots in the West, but then it's right back to another summer of trying to become something besides mediocre.
