(PORTLAND, ORE) -- Another rainy day here in the Pacific Northwest.

I grew up in Seattle so I know a thing or two about rain, but I never let the weather dictate what kind of day I'm having. Hey, it's a new day. A day to get fired up and make a difference in the work place or home. After stops in Columbus, Winnipeg and now here in Portland I'm anxious to get back to Toronto, but this trip has been terrific as I am learning a lot about our team and developing relationships for the future.

As the Raptors prepare for their final preseason game (thank goodness!), Sam Mitchell will continue to evaluate and gauge the progress of his team. A few things have impressed me during this camp.

Charlie V has people talking in NBA circles. (Ron Turenne/NBAE/Getty Images)
First: Team chemistry. The players enjoy being around one another and that is something that is extremely important to the infrastructure of any club.

Second: The play of rookies Charlie Villanueva, Joey Graham and Jose Calderon. Patience is the key. Some nights they'll look great. Other nights they'll struggle. I am encouraged by what I've seen. In addition, all three guys are solid people. You never, ever have enough character players. I hope Charlie continues to play with a healthy chip on his shoulder. In every stop we've been, his name comes up and it's good to see.

Third: Rafael Arajuo. No kidding. He has played well this past week. When he stays out of foul trouble and is aggressive with the ball in the post, good things happen. It doesn't matter if he starts or comes off the bench. The key for "Hoffa" is to keep battling and play to his strengths. He must continue to work on defensive positioning and rebounding.

Things I learned over the past month ....

If Mike James is in a groove give him the rock. When he's on he can knock down impossible shots.

Picture yourself moving to a different country facing a language barrier and, other than your wife, not knowing anyone. No one. On top of that joining an NBA team and battling for time on the court. Sound tough? Then put yourself in the shoes of Jose Calderon. I'm sure things are a blur for him, but I like the fact he's a gym rat and loves the game. He's got court vision and plays with poise. He's also getting a dose of NBA ball on a nightly basis and guarding quick, explosive players is a difficult challenge for anyone.

Talk about respect , 11,000 folks in Winnipeg gave Alvin Williams a standing ovation. Don't tell me folks in Canada don't follow NBA ball.

Speaking of Winnipeg ... I met so many wonderful people there that I want to publicly say thank you.

Not everyone can be the "Chief" and good, loyal lieutenants are tough to find, but the NBA managed to do quite well under the watch of deputy commissioner Russ Granik who will be leaving his post at the conclusion of the season. Give me a hard working, loyal employee any day of the week and never let them go!

Speaking of challenges. Chris Bosh is getting double teamed every time he touches the ball. Opposing guards on the wing are shadowing him, forcing Bosh to give up the ball from the block. The honeymoon is over for Chris. Teams have him clearly on the radar screen. There is no doubt he can deliver, but it won't be as easy as in the past when he had Vince Carter and Donyell Marshall around to take some pressure off him.

Newcomer Bob Peterson, the team's video coordinator works at his craft like a surgeon on the operating table. He is really in to it.

I'm not Matt Bonner's agent, but the guy needs an upgrade on his clothes. I promised him I'll work on getting him a clothing deal. White pants in October? Matt, I love ya, but that's a no-go.

Not sure what the future holds for Aaron Williams, but if I were a general manager of a legit playoff contender I would pick him up in a second.

The success of the Raptors hinges on two things: rebounding and defence. If they can manage to take care of business in those departments they will surprise some people.

Jamaal Magloire being traded was not a surprise. To Milwaukee however - that was a surprise. The Bucks were a team that never came up in various media reports. It was a steep price to pay. Mason is a tremendous slasher and dunker and as athletic as you ll see in the NBA. The unprotected first round pick in this year s draft made the trade in my opinion. The Bucks are making every effort to secure a playioff spot this year. The Hornets are rebuilding. Mason played at Oklahoma State so that should help attendance in Oklahoma City for the upcoming season. This is a good trade for both teams. If Magloire stays healthy and if TJ Ford comes back all the way from a serious spinal-cord injury Milkwaukee is a playoff team.

I don't see Portland making the playoffs, but I like what they're doing on and off the court.

The NBA season begins in six days and we haven't had a blockbuster deal yet. I have to believe a few teams want to shake up their rosters based on what they've seen the past three weeks.

Strange stat line preseason or no preseason: The Knicks turned the ball over 34 times Tuesday night, but beat the 76ers.

I'm still trying to get a read on Pau Gasol.

Be honest...blog or no blog?

I have no idea what the Knicks are up to. Every day there's a different rumour regarding players. All I can say is every day Jerome James wakes up, he should thank Isiah Thomas for giving him $30 million.

Chuck's liking what Joey Graham's shown so far. (Ron Turenne/NBAE/Getty Images)
The White Sox won the World Series when they beat the Angels in game two of the ALCS. Had they lost that game I think the devastation of losing twice in Chicago would have been too much for the Sox to overcome. They won with a little help from the men in blue of course. But take nothing away from the Sox. Pitching, defence and timely hitting. Sounds like a cliche, but it's true.

Let's go to the mail bag:

Sheldon from Toronto: Chuck, please give me the bottom line on Raptors NBA TV. Only two live preseason games? To quote you , "What's up with that?"

Chuck: Sheldon, believe me I wish we could do all eight, but it's very costly to televise these games and the cost factor must be balanced with ad revenue. Hopefully down the road we can increase the amount of coverage.

Marty from Barrie: Thanks for the blogs. I am concerned about CB4. Is he saving himself for the regular season?

Chuck: I don't think the word "save" is in his basketball soul. He plays hard, but is now experiencing things he's never seen before. For example, double teams on every half-court set. Larger players are going after him in the post attempting to out-muscle him. He probably needs to see the ball more on the block earlier in the clock. I think he'll be fine.

Will from Hamilton: What's your take on Jose Calderon?

Chuck: He loves to play the game. He is a true point guard. He is facing quick, athletic guards who are putting pressure on the ball at mid court forcing him to get rid of it early in the clock. At times he doesn't look to shoot and teams are sagging off on him, giving him an open look. If he can hit his jumper, that will be a big help believe me. I like him. I think he is an NBA player. Give him some time to learn the NBA game

Taj from Newmarket: Is Aaron Williams hurt?

Chuck: He had an ankle problem early in camp, but I think he's healthy now.

Blaine from Toronto: Does it bother you when ex Raptors rip the organization?

Chuck: Of course it does. I am proud to be a member of the organization and proud to live in Toronto. Always take the high road. Always. Donyell Marshall did just that. He could have ripped away, but what purpose would that have served. A explosive 20-second sound bite? Screaming headlines in the newspaper? Is that what it's all about? How about professionalism? How about the legacy you want to establish or leave when your playing days are over?

There are enough agendas out there from different parties. Players get a pretty nice check on the first and 15th don't they? I don't hear any athlete complaining at that time. For some, not all, (I repeat not all) once they leave it's a different story. I have heard all the lines They didn't get respected. They didn't get playing time. They were mistreated by a hard-nosed coach. They didn't like the city. They didn't like the food. They didn't like the fans. Enough.

An athlete might get things off their chest and enjoy the moment, but long term it won't help their career. You do not want to get a reputation as a chronic complainer. Ask any player ever traded or cut and they'll be upset with their former team. Any sport, any team. You name it. Shaq ripped away at the Lakers. T-Mac with the Magic, "T.O." with the 49ers.

Sol from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida: If the NBA draft were held today would the Raptors still take Joey Graham over Danny Granger? I'm looking at Granger's stats and they are off the charts for a rook.

Chuck: The word on the street in NBA circles was that Granger had some knee issues. The simple fact is the Raptors really like Joey Graham. This is not about Danny Granger who will be an oustanding player if he stays healthy. The Raptorts like Graham's work ethic. They like his attitude and his game. It's a win-win for both the Raps and Pacers.

Ben from Montreal: Like you I am an internet freak, but I am disturbed by the negative stories on the Raptors. As a fan what can I do?

Chuck: Ben, everyone is entitled to their opinion. If you have a problem with a certain paper or writer I would suggest you contact their editor.

Romay from New York City: Chuck , will the Raptors have a better record than the Knicks?

Chuck: I am making zero predications on wins for the Raps. What's the payroll in NY? Well over $100 million. With a payroll like that, they should have 50-60 wins. I doubt they will get close to that even with the Hall of Famer Larry Brown as their new coach.

Kenneth from Brampton: I went to one of the pre season games and noticed Charlie V. doesn't have any facial hair. Can you explain?

Chuck: Charlie has Alopecia Areata which is a skin disease resulting in hair loss on his scalp and elsewhere on his body. It affects four million Americans and is not life threatening. He does a great job encouraging those who are afflicted with it. What an impact he can make as an NBA player. Good to see him getting so involved.

Bill from Toronto: When you're on the road do you shop or go to movies?

Chuck: Do I shop? Seldom. I am a very common person who really doesn't need a lot. I am jeans and sweatshirt kind of guy. I can't remember the last movie I saw. I do like checking out malls, especially stores that carry bulk candy. I have a sweet tooth for chocolate peanuts. Most, if not all my time on the road is spent answering e-mails from our Raptors basketball fan base. I never get tired of talking ball with our fans. I love the city and love the loyalty our fans have shown this franchise throughout the years.

Henry from Atlanta: If you could build around one big man in the game today who would it be?

Chuck: Let's put the Raptors' players aside and focus on the 29 other teams. It would be Dwight Howard. I cast my Rookie of the Year ballot with his name on it and I think he is going to be a big-time star. He is going to be a franchise player. Need I say more? I noticed you're writing from Atlanta which happens to be his hometown so I want to give you a little NBA love back to Georgia!

Matthew from Richmond Hill: Quite often on your broadcasts you mention that Sam Mitchell is the best dressed coach in the NBA. Why don't coaches wear team apparel instead?

Chuck: No way. Sam is a professional and dresses like one. The guy was born to wear a suit. This is the NBA. This is prime time.. After watching Sam the last 13 months, there is no way I want him in a warm up outfit.

Steven in Burlington: When Rob Babcock first took the job I wasn't sure he was the right guy. Now I'm starting to change my attitude. Is he under pressure to win?

Chuck: Pressure is the name of the game in pro sports. This is a bottom-line business. From day one Rob said he wanted to operate on a three-year plan to turn the franchise around and lay the foundation for winning teams. We have just started year two so let's see what happens. In a candid interview several weeks ago Rob admitted last year was a learning experience for him and is better equipped to handle basketball related issues this season. I do know he is a very dedicated, hard working man who is committed to Toronto community related projects and the growth of the sport in Canada.

Hope you have enjoyed my preseason reports. It's been a ton of fun bringing you up-to-date information on Canada's team.

(WINNIPEG) -- The Blazers are running plays for Darius Miles. I can't recall any team ever running plays for him. Not the Clippers or the Cavs. Without Anderson, Abdur Rahim and Stoudamire, the Blazers will rely on Zach Randolph and Miles to do some damage inside. Miles in previous season relied on outside jumpers, but in preseason he's attempted only two three balls.

The Raps are giving up a ton of points in the paint. This could be a long night.

Later in the game, the two rooks Charlie V. and Joey play well enough to merit talk from different scouts and media people. They are high on their futures.

Chris Bosh looks tired and the Blazers pull away and win 105-98. The Raps look like they're ready to move onto the regular season. One problem. They've got one more preseason game Wednesday in Portland!

Graham and Villanueva combine for 35. Hoffa keeps battling and that is a good sign. Mo Peterson struggled going 2-9. Mike James went 6-17, but turned the ball over only once in 36-plus minutes. But the Raps surrendered 42 points in the paint allowing the Blazers to shoot 59%.

I'm anxious to see my oldest sister in Portland. As times goes by our lives seldom cross so it will be good to reconnect. As I reflect on my life, the one constant is family. At times, especially during basketball, there is confusion in my world, but when it's all said and done it always comes down to family. We'll hook up soon.

(11:30 AM) -- A busy day in Winnipeg. I had the pleasure of meeting hundreds of Raptors fans in the downtown area before the game. The basketball fans are turning out for the game. I would expect anywhere between 10-12 thousand tonight and the fan support for basketball in general here in Winnipeg is solid. Great to see. I'm also impressed with the facility. First class all the way.

Off to do the Fan 590 show. On the program today is John Ferguson who grew up here in Winnipeg, His father was the general manager of the old Winnipeg Jets and speaks very highly of the Winnipeg community. Of course sports fans are ready to bury the Leafs after losing to Philly 5-2 Saturday! I know our fan base loves hockey, but hey it's one game. Ed Belfour is entitled to a bad game isn't he? Brad Arnsberg , the Jays pitching coach joined us today and he is fired up about the possibility of a very productive off season. Can you say A.J. Burnett anyone? The show's now over and it's time to rock and roll and play some ball.

I will see Bill Schonley, former play-by-play announcer for Portland later on. I grew up listening to him on KVI in Seattle. He is an institution and remains one of the finest broadcasters in the history of the NBA.

The Blazers are very high on their young talent. I am excited to see Martell Webster - picked sixth overall in the draft. From what I hear he can flat-out shoot. The Blazers have some wonderful people working in their front office and coaching staff. Nate McMillian is a class act and I'm thrilled he received a five-year, $27 million deal. He is an outstanding coach.

Always a pleasure!

Chuck Checks In From Columbus

October 22/23, 2005

(TORONTO/COLUMBUS) -- Time to pack for a six day road trip. It's never easy. Talk about stress city. Tough to say good by to my wife and three children but after all these years they understand. It takes an incredible person to put up with my lifestyle and schedule and I am extremely blessed and fortunate to have an outstanding wife. How she does it I have no clue!

I grab a taxi to the airport and, of course on the way it breaks down at Dundas and Trafalgar. It's starting to rain. What a way to begin the day. Hey, no one died so you deal with it and move on.

I get to the airport to take our charter flight to Columbus. Our crew is outstanding. We are spoiled. There is no question about it. I read a couple of sports periodicals on the plane. Among them Sports Business Journal. I am fascinated by the billions of dollars in the sports industry. The majority of us pay attention to what's going on the field or in the arena, but behind the scenes is where the true action is.

We land around 5pm and after checking in (yes, I'm a huge neat freak), I leave for the Red Wings and Blue Jackets game.

I met a nice family from Toronto that drove in just for the game. Wow! They love their pucks! My former Fan590 producer Josh Rimmer's father Jeff is the play by play announcer for CBJ. We had a nice conversation before the game. I also ran into a few guys I worked with in Detroit, namely Ken Daniels (former CBC announcer) along with Ken Kal, Paul Woods and Mickey Redmod.

Mickey has gone through a serious of challenges pertaining to his health but keeps battling. He is a thoughtful, sincere man who loves his hockey. He's been involved in the sport almost forty years.

The game itself was a joke. It was over after the first period. Detroit blew them out. Columbus is banged up and missing some key players but there is such a huge gap between the Wings and Jackets it's not even close.

I returned from the game and ran into a few guys from the Cavs. They are ready to rock and roll for a big run at the playoffs. Top four in the East? No. Five or six? yes.

Paul McCartney is staying at our hotel. He's still packing them in. Sold out concert down the road. Those baby boomers can't get enough of "Yesterday." Took in some of the World Series and you can book it Sox in six. Michigan won another thriller over Iowa. Life is good.

Answered about 25 e-mails before calling it a night. The topics in no particular order: Joey Graham, Danny Granger, Charlie V., Jalen Rose, can Rob Babcock make any deals ...etc. Fans will forget preseason after Wednesday but I am excited about the young players on this team. They will have ups and downs but hang in with them. All three are solid people and that will help them when they confront that dreaded "rookie wall."

Sunday Noon:

Back at the arena as the Cavs are coming off the floor and the Raps are prepared to go over a mini-scouting report on Cleveland. Toronto reporters caught up with former Raptor Donyell Marshall who expressed his thanks to the city for an enjoyable two years. He admitted his first season was better than last year, but said he has never ripped the Raptors organization.

He also praised Raptors chairman of the board Larry Tanenbaum. Donyell said he wanted to play for a contender and the attraction of playing alongside LeBron James was a deciding factor in hooking on with the Cavs. Of course, four years, $20 million helps.

I have received a lot of e-mails over the past several months questioning Rob Babcock's decision not to move Marshall at the trading deadline. There is no question in my mind he attempted to deal him. What we don't know is what was offered in return. Other general managers were probably trying to dump long-term deals to acquire an expiring contract in Marshall. Unless there was a young player out there with upside, the last thing you want is an aging player with multiple years on his deal. It's a no win situation. It hurts ownership because they have luxury tax issues. It hurts the general manager if he has added several years to his cap and it hurts a coach if the emphasis is on youth.

That was the Raptors plan from day one. Donyell was terrific to all of us who cover the team on a daily basis and I'm sure he'll do well in Cleveland but the direction the Raps are taking it was not a good fit to bring him back. If you had $5 million to spend, would you rather have Matt Bonner and Jose Calderon or Donyell Marshall?

After practice I gathered information for Monday's broadcast on Raptors NBA TV. I spoke to Joey Graham and he told me that he's not a fan of the nickname "Aviator" as some fans have suggessted. He told me he'll get back to me whether he wants a nickname. Sounds good to me. Charlie V. was still surprised he was "T'ed" up against Boston. Apparently for stairing down Brian Scalabrine after a made basket he got hit in the pocket.

The best part of the afternoon? Seeing the glow and joy of Alvin Williams walking off the floor. He was born to play ball. So far so good with the knee. The Raps are keeping a limit on how much time he gets, but the encouraging news is he is able to play on a regular basis.

Alan Henderson stopped by to say hello. We've known each other since our days in Big Ten basketball. Optimism is running high in Cleveland and LeBron is THE man in the NBA. Everyone else (including Shaq, Kobe, etc) takes a backseat.

Talk to you after the game.

All the best and thanks for the e-mails cswirsky@torontoraptors.com

Always a pleasure

Chuck Checks Raptors vs. Cavs

October 23, 2005

(COLUMBUS, OH) -- Sunday 4:30PM The team arrives at Nationwide Arena for a 6PM tip. I had dinner with the veteran voice of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Joe Tait. Tait is one of the finest basketball announcers ever and deserves to be in the Basketball Hall of Fame. He has been calling Cavs games for 32 years. He also announced for the Nets and Bulls. Guys like Tait, Johnny Most, Chick Hearn, Marv Albert and Bill King are icons and their years of excellence will never be duplicated.

In attendance tonight is Wayne Embry joined by former Celtic teammate Larry Sigfried who lives in the central Ohio area. Embry is a walking basketball encyclopedia who not only has the knowledge, but wisdom as well and is an big asset to the Raptors organization

5:30pm: The teams are on the floor to warm up. Watching LeBron James go through even a simple routine lay up is a terrific sight. He is so strong and skilled it's mindboggling to think he's only 20-years old.

Danny Ferry the new general manager of the Cavs is here as well. I can't believe how the years go by. Wasn't it just yesterday he was coming out of Duke? It was Wayne Embry who pulled off a major trade for Ferry sending Ron Harper to the Clippers. Like Embry, I thought Ferry would have an All-Star career, but it never materialized. He turned out to be a good role player though.

6:00pm: Time to rock and roll. The building is half full. The Raptors are going with Bosh, Graham, Woods, James and Rose. Bosh is very active talking on defence. Good to see.

Isolation LBJ on Joey. Graham never leaves his feet and made James take an off-balance shot. Solid D from the Raptor rook.

James has a lot in common with Michael Jordan. He carries the ball on almost every half court set.

Bosh just picked up his third foul and we haven't played three minutes. What is going on? Cavs lead 6-1. Rose nailed a three ball fom the right pocket. Time out Cavs. Cleveland up 12-6. Woods is out Arajuo is in. Donyell Marshall drains a three from the corner. Somewhere I've seen that before. Hoffa with a nice baby hook deep in the paint.

Matt Bonner and Pape Sow are sitting this one out. Both look pretty good in suits. I think Matt might have only one suit, but that's OK. I'll have to work on him get him a clothing deal. Back to action.

Raps down by 10. Marshall is having a big quarter. Marshall with a push on Rose underneath the hoop. Marshall is given a technical foul. Rose looks outstanding. Hoffa hitting the boards Excellent fast break by the Raps. See what happens when you rebound the ball? Charlie V with a sick , wicked and nasty dunk from Rose.

Raps close the gap. Trailing 24-22 at the end of one.

Second quarter: Gorgeous pass from Graham to Charlie V for a dunk baseline left. Hoffa with a nice baseline pass to Charlie .Zendon Hamilton on the floor for the Cavs. He had a cup of coffer with the Raps a few years ago under Lenny Wilkins.

Jose Calderon knows how to play the game. He has a great feel for the game. Plays under control. Never hurries his pass. Transition basket. Hoffa with a dunk. Save some of this for the regular season...please!

Back-to-back threes for the Cavs. Not good. Timeout Raps. 42-33 Cleveland. Mo Pete nails back to back treys in the grill of King James. Damon Jones with a deep three. Wow... He shot this one from Athens, Ohio...maybe Athens, Greece! 47-44 Cavs at the half.

Third quarter: This just in ... Bears win. What a weekend. Michigan, Bears and Sox in the win column.

Bosh starting to warm up. Graham starts the third quarter after struggling the first two quarters. His stat line: 13 min: 0 points, 4 turnovers, 1 rebound, 1 assist. Give him time folks. Give him time.

Speaking of Joey... He just took a charge with LeBron going after him on the base line. Bosh with a semi-dunk-lay up. Sweet. Mike James with a twisting lay up.

We have a ball game here 57-52 Raps.

The Raps take another charge... Sam Mitchell has got to be loving this. Damon Jones for three. He is ridiculous.

Alvin Williams in the game. Right off the bench he whips an outstanding interior pass to Bosh who draws the foul. Marshall for three... He has 12 in the game. Jones for three. Just like that 61-60 Cavs.

After a steal, Arajuo throws an unnecessary 45-foot pass that's intercepted. It leads to... You guessed it, another Damon Jones three ball.

We go to the fourth...67-64 Cavs.

The Raps go with Graham, Charlie, Bosh, Peterson and Alvin Williams.

Charlie rejects the big Z... Wow! Bosh picks up his fourth. Can anyone make a shot..please! Stuck on 67-64 Cavs. Bosh to Charlie V with a dunk. Beautiful....ah, I love this game! Charlie just got mugged by Damon Jones... No foul. Don't get me started. It is loud in here. The sound effects are killing my ears. Is it asking too much to tone it down just a bit?

I like the PA announcer. Old school. Strong defence on LeBron. Even the King struggles against triple teams.

Hoffa in Bosh takes a seat. Nice job by Chris. Calderon for Alvin. Cavs 69-66 with 5:49 left. Hoffa goes right after Ilgauskas with a hook and is fouled. He gets two. He's perfect from the line (6-6).

LeBron with a driving lay up in traffic. It's the LBJ show as he initiates contact with Arajuo and goes to the line for two. Peterson buries a three and it's 74-71 Cleveland with 4:12 to go. Terrific game.

Cavs by the way playing without Larry Hughes and Drew Gooden... Hoffa rejected by Z. If he only had hops..even mini hops. Overall though, Arajuo has played well tonight. Calderon just took Z to school on a lay up. Time out...Cavs 76-Raps 74 with 2:24 to go.

Hoffa rejected, but a kind whistle goes in favour of Toronto. Arajuo won't complain Hoffa gets two free throws. He's Toronto's best big man at shooting free throws.. Henderson with a follow up stuff. Graham knocks down a fifteen footer 79-78 Cavs 44 seconds left.

Graham commits a loose ball foul. Ilgauskas hits two free throws. Calderon just broke down the Cavs defence running baseline right and drawing two defenders before finding Hoffa alone underneath - and one. 81 apiece with 35 seconds left.

Damon Jones with a running banker... Are you kidding me? Cavs up 83-81, 19seconds left.

Hoffa's stat line 17 points (9-9ft) 8 reb.

Here we go....Calderon 's pass intended for Hoffa on the right side is tossed out of bounds. Cavs up 83-81with 14.5 sec....you can chalk that one up to miscommunication.

Raps foul James with 13 seconds. left. If the Raptors lose this game they can still take away a lot of positives from this. The play of Arajuo, etc.

LBJ with two tosses 85-81-11sec to go. Ball game over Cavs 87 Raps 83. Marshall with a double-double. of 14/10. James with 22.

The Raps shot 37% for the game. 26% from 3pt range. 83% from the foul line.

Off to Winnipeg...We'll chat tomorrow....it's been a pleasure!

(TORONTO) -- You got to love the new kids on the block. After watching Charlie V. and Jose Calderon strut their stuff the past several games it was Joey Graham's turn Friday.

Joey Graham had a breakout night Friday. (Ron Turenne/NBAE/Getty Images)
Graham showed confidence with his mid range game tossing in 20 including a sweet dunk. The "Aviator" also got a lesson two from Paul Pierce. Welcome to the NBA, Joey. Villenueva entered the game as the highest scoring rookie in the NBA, but I want to give him props for his passing. He has a ton of skills and knows he needs to continue working on his rebounding.and defence, but for starters Charlie V. has surpassed expectations.

Mo Peterson was outstanding and Alvin Williams made some beautiful assists. Want to know how much respect Williams has around the league? When he came on the floor the other night against the Nets and then again Friday night against Boston, Williams received encouraging words from opposing veteran players. A pat on the backside, a wink of an eye saying, "Hey, good to see you back."

Moments like these are priceless.

This was a typical preseason game featuring a ton of fouls and at times it was difficult to get into a consistent flow . That won't be the case in two weeks. Before I game I had a nice chat with the architect of the Celtics Danny Ainge. He is collecting a bevy of young players that will only help him down the road. He has the option of packaging a few of these young players for a veteran or he could really make a blockbuster and deal peddle Paul Pierce. Stay tuned .

It's on to Columbus and we'll update our travels over the weekend. I'm eager to see King James along with the new-look Cavs. I'll have to ask Donyell Marshall about that report he frequently rips the Raps.

One last note. Veteran official Joey Crawford worked the game and he remains one of my favourite referees of all time. Give me Crawford, Danny Crawford (no relation) and Steve Javie any day of the week.

One more thought...enough of "Hoffa" stories. Thank you.

All the best and thanks for the e-mails cswirsky@torontoraptors.com

Chuck Checks the Raps Victory Over the Nets

October 19, 2005

(TORONTO) -- I arrived at the Fan 590 studios around 11:30 a.m. and I'm met with, "Hey, Chuck how ungrateful is Lamond Murray. The Raptors paid him pretty good money for three years and now after the fact he's telling them to shove it." Believe me I have better things to do than deal with Lamond Murray.

The topic of retired jerseys surfaced as we debated the merits of whether Vince Carter's jersey should be retired sometime down the road or even if the Raptors should hand out #15 in the event an acquired player selects that particular number . The overwhelming number of fans polled believe the Raptors should never retire Carter's jersey and the club should be willing to offer the number to a player if in fact it's requested. Let's move on.

I arrive at the ACC at 4:20 and slip in to a Raptors TV production meeting. John Shannon does an outstanding job makings sure both Raptors and Leafs TV run on all cylinders. Like coaches and players plan for the regular season we're doing the same behind the scenes on the television side. I work with outstanding people and am extremely fortunate to be surrounded by professionals who know what they're doing.

Time to go on the floor and I run in to Nets president Rod Thorn. He ranks right up there as one of the best people of all time in this business. He is all class. We had a good talk and I wished him well for a good season with the exception of four dates on the schedule.

I then went to hear Sam Mitchell's pre-game media gathering. Injuries, injuries and more injuries for the Raps. I can't wait to see Joey Graham on the floor, but only when he's ready to play. Mitchell stated that Alvin Williams will indeed play but couldn't forecast how much time he'll get.

The Nets jump off to a good start. Their big three of Carter, Kidd and Jefferson played well and demonstrated why this is going to be a tough team to beat in the East. They're loaded and the acquisition of Marc Jackson will only help them. Carter was smooth draining fade aways and dunks...Matt Bonner took a knee-on-knee with Jason Kidd near the end of the half, but Bonner came back on the floor to start the third quarter. Thank goodness.

The Nets looked like they were going to put this baby to bed but their second/third unit couldn't hold the lead as Derrick Zimmerman committed a careless foul with 1.6 seconds left putting Charlie Villanueva at the foul line for three and the rook went to the produce section and came through with onions.

Corey Williams was strong with the ball in the final four minutes in regulation time to put Toronto in a position to go into overtime. Give credit to the Raps as they played hard and the effort was there. Charlie V. and Jose Calderon were fantastic. Hey, it's a win.

Some quick hits: Hoffa looked comfortable. Alvin Williams played which is fantastic news. I was delighted to see him in uniform.Chris Bosh looked tired.

I'll keep blogging...the next report Friday night after the Boston game.

A pleasure! cswirsky@torontoraptors.com

Chuck Checks In Before the Raps Take on the Nets
by Chuck Swirsky
--raptors.com
October 19, 2005

It's Tuesday night and as I prepare for the Raps-Nets game Wednesday night a few observations on the preseason thus far, if I may.

I am very impressed with what I've seen out of Chris Bosh. The Raptors need to feed him the ball. It is a team game and you want to include everyone in the offence, but establishing Bosh early only helps his teammates. Bosh can pass out of double teams as he looks for an open man and rarely takes a bad shot. There is no doubt he is capable of averaging a double-double.

Chuck's calling for a "Standing O" for Alvin Williams Wednesday in Toronto. (Ron Turenne/NBAE/Getty Images)
Charlie V. is a player. No, I'm not prepared to put in the Hall of Fame but he came to camp with a terrific attitude and a willingness to do what it takes to become a better player. The smartest basketball move he ever made was the day he enrolled at UConn to play for Jim Calhoun. He realizes he needs to work on his rebounding, but he has an outstanding upside to his game.

I am the president of the Mike James Fan Club. He recently told me he is a flamboyant player. He plays with a chip on his shoulder. He is confident, not cocky. He is not arrogant, but is very comfortable with who he is as a player. Is he a point guard in the classic sense? No. He's a combo guard, but I think the Raptors will do just fine with James in the backcourt. He competes every night. He loves the game. Believe me, I appreciate players who love the game.

We have discussed the centre position a million times. I'm hoping Aaron Williams gets healthy so we can see him on the floor. He may be the best bet .We'll see. At what point does head coach Sam MItchell decide to go small?

Rebounding and defence remain concerns.

Things I'm hoping for sooner than later: Mo Peterson to get back in a shooting groove. Joey Graham returning to action. A big man...any big man to step up. A standing ovation for Alvin Williams when he steps on the floor. If any Raptor deserves it he does. Jose Calderon is growing on me. I like his poise and the fact he wants to be coached. Matt Bonner's offseason work emphasizing putting the ball on the floor has paid off through three preseason games. Not sure when Eric Williams will return, but the Raps could sure use him off the bench.

Lamond Murray, like all of us, is entitled to freedom of speech. His opinions on the Raptors front office reported in the media Wednesday were to be expected.

However, consider the source. On his way out the door In Los Angeles he blasted the Clippers. The same scenario played out in Cleveland and now Toronto. The Murray transaction will go down as one of the worst in franchise history. At the time I thought it might prove to be a good deal. He was a threat to score any time he touched the basketball. The Raptors rid themselves of a horrible contract in Yogi Stewart and appeared to be in a position to make the playoffs. But Murray suffered a foot injury and missed his first year as a Raptor. It went downhill after that. His lack of enthusiasm and complete disinterest in the organization mirrored his on the court demeanour.
News and notes from the Swirsk:
  • I really like what the Rockets have done in the offseason. Stromile Swift has baggage but I think with Yao Ming and T-Mac around you'll see a different player altogether.
  • Vlade Divac officially announced his retirement. I wonder if he flopped during the press conference.
  • I've said it once and I'll say it again..the Boston Celtics have a terrific collection of young players . I smell a trade coming if not now certainly before the deadline.
  • Allan Houston leaves the game the way he entered: class.
  • I expect Memphis to slip this season.
  • Ditto: Washington and maybe Chicago.
  • I can't put a handle yet on Orlando.
  • Please remember to contribute what you can to those in need in Pakistan.
  • John Salmons is having a terrific camp for the 76ers.
  • The NBA lost a great voice in Bill King who for many years called the play by play for the Golden State Warriors. What a talent.
  • Those powder blue Chargers retro uniforms are the best.
  • I have no problem with the new NBA dress policy. If you're a professional dress like one.
  • I really like Seattle's Nick Collison. He just gets after it.
  • Am I the only guy on the planet that still believes in Joey Harrington?
  • Antonio Davis has changed his tune. Now, he's happy to be a Knick. That's what happens when you lost $250,000 for not reporting on time.
  • I'm telling you right now Chris Kaman can play.
  • Marcus Camby is making seven million a year and he wants a clothing allowance. Give me a break.
  • It doesn't matter if it's Houston or St. Louis. White Sox win the World Series.
  • Think Lattrell Sprewell is having second thoughts after rejecting a 3 year 21 million dollar deal last year from Minnesota?
I'll catch up with you after tonight's game. E-mail me with your thoughts at cswirsky@torontoraptors.com or call me at 416-815-6189

Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to read my column!

Chuck Checks Maccabi vs. the Raptors
by Chuck Swirsky
--raptors.com

October 16, 2005

I can't help but not think about Jason Collier. While broadcasting University of Michigan basketball in the mid-late 90s he played at Indiana and had a nice stroke from 15-20 feet. He was not on the same page with Bobby Knight and later transferred to Georgia Tech. I can't believe he's gone at 28. He ate up the Raptors two years ago in a game at the ACC. The sad thing is that he leaves a young wife and a year-old daughter. Life is not fair. Tomorrow is promised to no one. No one.

The NBA/Raptors took nothing for granted Sunday. I arrived at the ACC at 10am and was greeted by a batch of security folks along with a mean looking dog. I love dogs, but this dog had attitude if you know what I mean. I don't think I want to get in his way. Hey, I have nothing to hide. I brought my material for the game and that's it.

Chuck is liking what Mike James has shown so far in the preseason. (Ron Turenne/NBAE/Getty Images)
10:30pm -- We had our first TV production meeting of the year. What happens at one of these meetings? Let's see. We have Director Paul Graham and my main man Leo Rautins exchanging a few humorous one liners.

Our game Producer Dan Gladman arrived in a suit. It's the first and perhaps the last time I'll see him in a suit. He did a solid job running through story lines. We want to focus on the Raptors new players, but also give props to Macabbi. He was very thorough. Dan is a baller. That's the highest compliment I can pay anyone. Once you are a baller in my book you have a life time pass to Swirskyville. Not sure what that means but it sounds good.

Leo looks good, but the guy always looks good. It's a gift. I mean let's get real. I'm bald and 5-9. He's handsome and 6-7 The guy is GQ all the way. .I think the Raptors will win by ten points. I respect Maccabi, but with the long plane ride to Toronto I just don't see them winning. I think Sam Mitchell really wants to win this game. He wants to win every game, but I can see him playing the veterans a little longer than the previous two games.

11:00am I go out on the floor and Leo and I are going over pronunciations of the Maccabi players. I saw Anthony Parker for the first time in a good three or four years. He was an outstanding high-school player at Naperville Central just outside Chicago. I saw him play a ton. He later went to Bradley and had a terrific career and became a first round pick of the Nets.

Parker told me he has a year left on his contract and is open to returning to the NBA but really enjoys playing in Tel Aviv. As I make my way up the ramp to the Maccabi locker-room my paths cross with Maceo Baston. He remains one of my all-time favourite people. I met him when he was an incoming freshman at Michigan and broadcasted every one of his games. I wish he had been given more of an opportunity here in Toronto. He can help this team. He gets after it and loves to rebound. He's got an out in his contract in August.

11:30pm The first of three ginger ale and cranberry concoctions. My all time favourite drink. I'll have another just before tip and one at half time. What can I say? I have a routine after all these years. I bump into David Stern on the floor and we talked a little ball, but I gave him a batch of "Chuck's Chips." Everytime the Commish is in town he gets a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies. I like David Stern a lot. He has dome a fantastic job. I would hate to be on his X-list believe me.

12:30pm We have a rehearsal for the opening. It goes smoothly and I am ready to rock and roll.

1:00pm tip off It's a blur. I'll get back to you after the game.

3:45pm Parker hits the game winning shot. I was wrong. I thought the Raps would be able to put away Maccabi in the third quarter, but they didn't. They have three legit NBA players in Parker, Baston and Vujcic. Bosh played his heart out, but that's nothing new. Mike James gets after it. He competes. I love it.

I'm a bit worried about Mo Pete. He's just not in the groove. Embarrassing loss for the Raps? No. I never, ever disrespect any team, but I am disappointed. The good news? ...It's pre season. I call my wife after the game. I need to pick up some dinner. Welcome to the real world. Ball game over and get home ...now!

One quick look at NFL scores. My Bears are in the process of kicking the Vikings bum! I love it. Talk about a team on the verge of disaster...check out the Minnesota Vikings.

Talk to you soon. Hope you're enjoying the blogs. Take care.

Chuck Checks In from Courtside in New Hampshire

October 14, 2005

Friday: 5:30pm It a dreary, raining day here in Manchester. Every morning I wake up and fire up the computer. I hit ESPN.com and check out NBA stories through the various links. I read at least 60 papers per day . It's the only way you can stay up on things. If I can get one nugget of information on a team for our broadcast to inform our listeners/viewers it's worth it. At this time of year there are a ton of feature stories on players. Is there such a thing as overload? I don't think so. The more information out there the better.

What grabbed my attention was today's headline in the Toronto Sun that implied Joey Graham was "damaged goods" referring to knee tendinitis. He played only 14 minutes Wednesday against Utah and I'll be surprised if he plays tonight. I need to check out this story. He is a wonderful young man. He is quiet, respectful and looks at you in the eyes when you speak to him. I admire that in people. How often when you speak to someone are they looking around the room or checking out other people and not paying any attention to your conversation? Unfortunately, too often. Not with this guy. He told me his his twin brother Steven is in the Spurs camp.

After a breakfast of two eggs, bacon and toast it's off to the team's shoot around.

11:30pm: My first look Verizon Wirless Arena. It seats about 11,000 and from what I understand the Celtics play here every year. This is Red Sox country. The New England area can't get enough of the Red Sox. The Patriots have won three Super Bowls in four years, but off season Red Sox news is on the front page of the sports section . Last time I checked they were eliminated from the playoffs were they not?

Shoot arounds help me prepare for a broadcast. For the most part, teams run through a few sets of their own and go over the opposing team's tendencies. To me it never gets boring. I love it. Honestly I learn something new every day.

Sam Mitchell informs the media that Matt Bonner will start tonight. Good call on his part. Pape Sow, Eric Williams and Joey Graham won't play. I spoke to Graham about being "damaged goods" and he was surprised by the information. He is listed day to day. No big deal. Had a terrific conversation with Mike James . He is an outstanding man. I really, really like him. Alvin Williams told me he hopes to play Wednesday. I'm hoping his knee can hold up this year. When the Raptors were enjoying success a few years ago he was the glue. No one has a bigger heart than Alvin. Am I bias? You better believe it. He is a fantastic person.

Noon: Tried to sneak in a hair cut ( yes, believe it or not I do from time to time get one), but the local barber shop wanted $20 (US) for a trim. Are you kidding me? I'll wait to hit Supercuts in Burlington Saturday.

1:00pm: Arrived at WGIR to host my FAN590 show. We touched on everything. The fiasco at the ALCS. The Atlanta Thrashers. NFL football. Raps basketball. I interviewed Dave and Paula Bonner (Matt's parents). Matt bought a new home in Concord and they're living in it. Great calls on today's show.

5:00pm: Check out time. Hit the team bus and off to the arena.

5:20pm A ton of scouts at the game. Wow. I've gotten a chance to get to know a few of them pretty well over the years and the ones I trust, I can always get the bottom-line truth from them. No spin. They like the Raptors draft picks and are very high on Roko Ukic. They also are big Mike James fans. Just before the tip I went over to see former Raptor assistant Tony Brown. He will be a head coach in this league. Mark it down.

7:30pm: Ball game. Matt Bonner gets a loud ovation from the fans here. Think he's looking forward to this? Duh. The Raps are wearing their red uniforms.I dig those big time. The starting five: Bonner, Bosh, Rose, James, Arajuo. Boston's without Tony Allen, Al Jefferson and Marcus Banks. Both Sam Mitchell and Boston head coach Doc Rivers are wearing some good looking suits. One of their outfits is probably a month's pay for me.

Bonner starts the game covering Paul Pierce. Bonner drains a three the first 90 seconds of the game. Nothing but net. Bonner is on fire with a baby hook. He's on pace for a 50 point night! Well, maybe not.

Boston's Dan Dickau cut his shaggy hair from a year ago. No highlights, either. Nice player, but can't play defence. James has taken him to the cup going right three times already. Doc Rivers has seen enough. Bonner just hit another three. You can't stop the Red Rocket. Hoffa just picked up his second foul three minutes in to the game. I don't know what to think. Bonner with a steal, drive and a score. We're watching history folks. 19-5 Raptors-timeout Boston. Arajuo with foul number three at the 6:02 mark. Loren Woods, it's your turn. Show us what you got. Bonner with a tip and a score. Bonner with a steal-pass and assist to James. WOW! He is playing out of his mind! Bonner with eleven first quarter points. Must be his mom's meat loaf and potatoes. James strokes a 22 footer. He's in a groove.

The Raptors are outhustling Boston. Charlie Villanueva got back on defense and deflected a sure Boston layup. Toree Morris comes in the game. In my next life I'd like a body like his. He is one big dude. At the end of one: Bonner 32-uh-Toronto 32 Celtics 20.

Second quarter: Bonner gets a breather. Good work, my man. The refs are earning their pay. This is going to be a long night at the office folks. What time does Pearson shut down? Toree Morris is really battling hard on the boards. Good to see. Charlie V with a mid-range jumper. He's got a sweet j. Calderon with a terrific feed to Charlie. Charlie with a nice dish to Bryant Mathews that led to a Boston foul. Ryan Gomes is a flat out steal for Boston. You can book it. Just what the Celtics need..another good young player. Don't they have enough?

Calderon continues to impress. Best way to describe him? Poised. Michael Grange of the Globe and Mail is sitting next to me here at courtside. Excellent writer. Better person.

This is like an out of body experience. Watching a Raptors game and not broadcasting it. It's something I'm not enjoying it believe me. Boston's on a run. Davis, LaFrentz, Gomes... Jalen getting extended time here in the first half. Sam Mitchell is really into this one. He's animated and seldom sat down.

Halftime: Raps 57 Boston 55.

Third quarter: Hoffa with his fourth personal. We just started the period. He's playing with no confidence. Loren Woods back in. Paul Pierce decided it's time to play. Mike James is off the charts...driving and letting it all hang out from 20. Raptors centres continue to struggle. I'm being kind. Tierre Brown with a gorgeous ball fake on Dickau and buries a 21-footer. Mitchell is going with a frontcourt of Villanueva, Bosh and Woods. Interesting. With 30 seconds to go, Ricky Davis just threw down a monster slam. That was nasty. Raps lead 78-74 as we go to the fourth.

Fourth quarter: Orien Greene has entered the game....so has Justin Reed, a second year player out of Mississippi. He's underrated. I like him. Arajuo back on the floor at the 9:43 mark. Charlie V with a clean block on Scalabrine...some one forgot to tell official Ted Bernhardt...Boston is making this run with three rookies, a third year player who seldom played in Kendrick Perkins and Scalabrine. You can take this to the bank. Boston has collected outstanding young assets that will get better.

If GM Danny Ainge plays his cards right he will be able to package a few of these kids for an established veteran. Remember we haven't seen Jefferson, Allen or Banks. Don't get me wrong Scalabrine is a nice player, but 5 years -15 million?

Calderon comes in at the 5:44 mark for Corey Williams. Hoffa with a dunk. His first basket of the game. Bonner drains a three from 25...90-90 with 4:35 to go. Not for long. Charlie V. has just fouled out. His line: 17 pts, 6reb in 26 min. Woods with a slam. That's his first hoop. Better late than never.

Caledron to the rack...missed. Controlled the tip to Hoffa who hits a soft 12-footer. 96-94 Boston with 2:58. Woods has just fouled out. The two teams have combined for 71 fouls. Are you kidding me? 98-94 with 2:43 left sports fans. Justin Reed with a turn around. Tough basket. A three-ball by Tierre Brown and it's a three-point Boston lead. Hoffa racing down the floor...a pump , lay up and one. This has to help his self esteem. He's registered seven fourth quarter points. Glad to see it.

100-100. Reed with an eight footer . Brown commits a careless turnover in the paint. Reed with a hard drive on the baseline. Raps down by four with 26 seconds left ... Hoffa attempts a three with 25 seconds to go. Rimming no. Reed has taken over this game. He's scored the last six points.

Final - 107-100 Celtics Mike James led the Raps with 20.

It's back to Toronto to call the Macabbi game Sunday. Don't forget you can catch this one live on Raptors NBA TV. Thanks for your time. Always a pleasure.

(MANCHESTER, NH) -- It's Thursday night and here I am at a Radisson Hotel in downtown Manchester, New Hampshire.

The Raptors bus pulled in around 5pm and greeting us was none other than Matt Bonner's father. He is a big man with a hearty smile and a personality to match. He's the type of guy that, once you meet him, you're a friend for life. One can understand where Matt developed an outgoing, warm demeanor.

Since my Raptors TV network "brothers" aren't here on the trip it gave me an opportunity to catch up on a few things... namely sleep!

Matt Bonner and the Raptors are in the Red Rocket's home state of New Hampshire Friday to take on the Celtics. (Ron Turenne/NBAE/Getty Images)
Holding down two full-time jobs can be taxing, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I absolutely love calling the play-by-play for the Raptors and thoroughly enjoy hosting my 1-4 show on the Fan 590.

The common denominator in both equations is our fan base. Without the fans I wouldn't even consider hosting a talk show. I love taking calls and enjoy interviewing sports figures that shape how we look at the landscape of sport. One top of that - and no this is not sucking up - I have outsanding people I look up to in my immediate departments in Tom Anselmi and John Shannon of MLSE and Nelson Millman at the Fan.

For those of you who have a great boss do yourself a favour. Don't even think about moving or looking elsewhere. Good, solid management people are tough to find. From time to time though I do need one day to come up for air.

So it's 7:30 PM and I'm answering e-mails. A lot of e-mails. The story of my life ... e-mails! But I am an internet freak. I admit it. I love corresponding with our fans. E-mails about Hoffa. E-mails about Charlie V. E-mails on whether Chris Bosh will remain a Raptor.

Bulletin! This just in - relax. He's under contract for two years. I am convinced if the Raps turn the corner and show promise he'll be back. I can't speak for him though and quite frankly these things take care of themselves in due time. Now however is NOT the time to worry about Bosh and free agency.

Manchester is bigger than one would think. My only disappointment is after walking the streets I cannot find a DQ. In my world DQ rules. I am a DQ junkie. Their cheeseburgers are underrated. How about that. The Swirsk actually calling a burger underrated. Got to love blogging, man.

Ran into Joey Graham in the hotel lobby. I asked him about a nickname. Sky Pilot, Aviator, etc..he said how about Captain. I said let's work on that one. Too bad his first name isn't Tom. We could use a David Bowie tie in. Ground control to Major Tom ... that's a reach. My bad.

The rest of the night will consist of assisting my daughter with homework (over the phone can be tough but we manage) and encouraging my two sons to get to bed on time. Good luck. They are sports fanatics. I wonder how that happened. They love the Raptors, but their favourite player is Chauncey Billups. Remember him? He was a Raptor ...

The game Friday against Boston is going to be a Matt Bonner love fest. People in New Hampshire idolize Matt . He's one of their own. I am not kidding. If he could run for governor of the state, he would win. He's that popular. I am not, I repeat, I am not exaggerating.

Got a call from a student radio reporter at Humber College who needed a quick interview so we did our best to help.

One last look at the internet before I call it a night. Darko and LeBron in the news. We'll catch up with you Friday. I am anxious to see the Boston Celtics. There collection of young players is impressive. Very impressive.

Can we kidnap Al Jefferson and take him back on the Raptors charter? Come to think of it how about reserving a seat for Manny. I heard he wants out. The Jays need a bat.

Drop me a line and let's talk Raptors/ NBA ball. Or call me at 416-815-6189 and voice your opinion.

Always a pleasure. It is an honour and privilege serving our great fans and our wonderful city.

Chuck Checks the Preseason Opener

October 13, 2005

(TORONTO) -- Overtime in preseason? Are you kidding me?

Hey, why not? There were plenty of positives from Air Canada Centre. Forget the outcome. With the regulars more or less taking a night off, the Raptors went with young players who are trying to impress coach Sam Mitchell.

Jose Calderon showed he is more than capable of running the point in his first preseason game. (NBAE/Getty Images)
Yes there is a glaring need for rebounding and defence. It's there for the taking. What centre will step up for the Raptors? No-names like Robert Whaley and James Lang collected 17 Utah rebounds against Toronto and owned the boards. Whaley, a second round pick out of tiny Walsh College was impressive. So was Lang.

They were hungry and wanted it off the glass, but again there was plenty of good news. The hustle of Charlie Villanueva. The scoring prowess of Tierre Brown. The calming influence Jose Calderon provides on the floor. These are things the Raptors can build on as they get ready for Boston Friday night in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Brown is not bashful. He looks to score and plays with plenty of confidence, but enough of the props. There is plenty of room for improvement and rebounding is a priority. Do you think Wayne Embry can still play?

A few observations from talking to fans before and after the game:
  • The fact the Raptors plan to make red the dominant colour on the floor has been well received. The fans are ready for a change with their home uniforms. What do you think? Less purple?
  • The variety of concessions has increased which is always a good thing. Unless of course you're a broadcaster and can't enjoy the delicacies during the game!
  • Great to see the "Raptor" back in action. By far the best mascot in the NBA hands down and you're talking to a guy who just isn't in to mascots but this "dino" is worth the price of admission.
  • Walking in to the ACC last night felt really good. It's my second home. I love the place. I love the atmosphere. I love everything that comes with my job. In fact it's not a job. It's a passion.
  • I see we have a brand new raptors.com. Your thoughts, please. Think they can give me hair?
  • Speaking of the web site ... can Orlando Bloom play?
  • Mike James has an infectious smile.
  • Sam Mitchell is in mid-season form. Got to love his passion.
  • Maccabi Tel Aviv is here Sunday (Raptors NBA TV at 1pm Eastern time). It will be a chance to see former Raptor Maceo Baston. Selfishly I wish he were still a member of the team. Great guy. Hard worker and loves to board.

Some quick news and notes from the Swirsk:
  • Allen Iverson doesn't need preseason. The guy is so good he can score 25 pts at 4 am if he had to.
  • The Suns are in trouble. You can put the spin on it any way you want, but don't tell me that losing Amare Stoudamire for at least four months isn't impactful. Watch Steve Nash's assists numbers drop.
  • I applaud the Bulls for dealing Eddy Curry. They had no other choice.
Charlie Villanueva showed his scoring touch in Game 1. (Ron Turenne/NBAE/Getty Images)
  • Give me Golden State's Troy Murphy any day of the week.
  • After watching replay after replay I think MLB should tell umpire Doug Eddings to hit the links and put the mask down until April.
  • USA Basketball did the right thing naming Coach K to run the show. In my book he's right up there with John Wooden.
  • Hey, if the Vikings wanted to take a cruise that badly they could have easily called Carnival. I've heard of team bonding but ...
  • At this point I'd love to get my hands on Chris Mihm. Unfortunately so would about 15 teams in the NBA. That's why if you are a big man with any promise you can guarantee yourself millions of dollars and longevity
  • Wait a second. Let me get this straight. Marcus Camby wants the NBA to compensate the players for demanding they upgrade their dress code. Give me a break.
  • Boston has so many good, young players it's scary. I'm talking about the Celtics not the Bruins.
  • I love a good pecan pie.
  • If the stories out of LA are true regarding the Clippers ready to wheel and deal, I'd be quite interested in seeing what they want for Chris Wilcox.
  • Is the fall season the best time of year or what?
  • Quick question. Why did the Bobcats take Sean May if they already had a four man in Emeka Okafor?
  • I admit I am an NFL guy, but Troy Davis can play for me any day of the week. Good pick up for Edmonton.
  • I was flat out wrong about Mo Taylor. I thought he was going to be a big time NBA stud. I was wrong.
  • One thing I can't stand. Players who leave for another team rip their former organization, coach, etc. Take the high road, OK? For Raja Bell to complain about Jerry Sloan's system is laughable. Didn't Sloan's system make Bell a very rich man in Phoenix?
  • I am so bad fixing things around the house I have 1-800-YOU-DO-IT pasted everywhere around the place.
  • Two weeks of camp and no word yet whether Larry Brown wants to trade half his roster. That's a good start. I'm impressed.
  • If ... If the Nets stay healthy they are my choice to win the Atlantic. Without question with a few breaks I could see them winning the East. Honest. I'll go in to the season picking Miami like everyone else, but the depth on the Nets is impressive.
  • Michigan football? Please, let's move on.
  • One of my favourite boards to read is realgm. The true ballers are very intelligent.
  • I don't mind talking puck on my 1-4pm Fan 590 show, but for fans to rip the Leafs after three or four games? Is a bit ridiculous if you ask me. Yes, I love the shootout.
  • How is Jerry Sloan NOT in the Hall of Fame. I'm waiting for an explanation.
  • If Rashad McCants stays focused he could be a steal in the first round.
  • If I ran one of those satellite radio stations I would do everything humanly possible to have Damon Jones and Sam Cassell co-host a program. A listener may not get a word in, but it would be entertaining radio.
  • Speaking of radio. For the many, many e-mails I received from aspiring, young broadcasters looking for tips on breaking in to the business, look no further than the FAN 590's Eric Smith. Here's a guy who was raised in Burlington. Graduated from Humber. Took an entry level position at the FAN and worked his way up hosting, reporting and now given the break of a lifetime serving as analyst on the team's radio broadcasts. That's how you do it. Nothing is given to you. Nothing. That's the way it should be. OK. Call me old school, but I am who I am.

I'll be with the team for every preseason game and filing reports right here on raptors.com

On a personal note I want to express my deep sadness over the loss of Jays icon Tom Cheek. My thoughts and prayers go to his wife Shirley and the Cheek family. It was a pleasure getting to know Tom over the past eight years and his legacy and spirit will continue to be felt for generations to come. Players come and go. Managers and general managers are hired and fired. Owners change bank accounts, but there was always one constant: Tom Cheek. Thank you, Tom for what you did for the city, its fans and for the game of baseball. You will and always will be missed.

Drop me a line and let's talk Raptors/ NBA ball. Or call me at 416-815-6189 and voice your opinion.

Always a pleasure. It is an honour and privilege serving our great fans and our wonderful city.
